In a glittering ceremony in Paris, the MICHELIN Guide recently unveiled its first global selection of first-class hotels. This was part of the launch of the MICHELIN Key Awards for 15 top global destinations, scheduled for 2024 and early 2025. A total of 2,457 hotels around the world received these coveted awards. A look at the numbers shows that 1,742 hotels were able to win one key, 572 hotels were able to win two keys and 143 hotels were even able to win three keys, which stand for exceptional excellence and hospitality. According to the information from Restaurant rankings the evaluation is based on five international criteria.
Those of us who love to travel can look forward to a variety of options. The MICHELIN Guide's digital platform provides access to the best restaurants and hotels worldwide, so no one gets lost in the search for the perfect stay. Europe is particularly popular, with a total of 1,200 MICHELIN keys. Here France leads the ranking with 203, Italy with 188 and Germany with 130. In the DACH region, 285 keys were awarded, including 21 new additions.
Austria's highlights
This year, some hotels in Austria can also look forward to two MICHELIN Keys. The Hotel Tannenhof is one of the new highlights, while in Germany the Vitalhotel Alter Meierhof and in Switzerland the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace have also received two keys. There are impressive other new entries across Europe, such as De L’Europe in Amsterdam with three keys and Villa Nai 3.3 in Croatia, also with three keys.
The awards are not just limited to Europe. 526 MICHELIN Key Hotels were also recognized in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Particularly noteworthy are the 50 new additions in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The new stars include the Wakax Hacienda in Mexico and the Warren Street Hotel in the USA, both of which have been upgraded. There is also reason to be happy in South America: 84 hotels were newly awarded, including in Brazil, where both the Hotel das Cataratas and the Rosewood São Paulo received three keys.
Global context
In Africa, 13 MICHELIN Key hotels have now been selected in 11 countries, including six hotels with three keys in countries such as Kenya and Morocco. A new era of awards begins in Asia with high-quality hotels in China, India and Vietnam. The Asaba Ryokan in Japan has even upgraded itself from two to three keys.
The MICHELIN Keys, the hotel equivalent of the well-known MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, are now entering their second year. These awards offer travelers valuable orientation in the often confusing world of hotels. In total, over 7,000 hotels met the strict criteria of the inspectors, who are always looking for the best experience for their guests.
The four special awards from MICHELIN include the MICHELIN Architecture & Design Award, which was awarded to Atlantis The Royal in Dubai, and the MICHELIN Wellness Award, which was received by the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland.
