Kulturcafé Max in Hernals: moving out threatens the big end!

A significant change is imminent at the Hernalser Kulturcafé Max: the club Shizzle will move out of the popular location at Mariengasse 1 at the end of 2025. Since 2018, the café has established itself as a lively place for art promotion and cultural events, where a variety of in-house and guest programs have been held. But now this place could soon be a thing of the past.

“We had big plans to run the Kulturcafé Max as a café open all year round with evening events, but unfortunately that didn’t work out,” says chairwoman Joana Marialena Karácsonyi. The end of the operators does not mean the end of the cultural initiative: 20 free events are planned until the turn of the year, which will offer the citizens of Hernals the opportunity to come into contact with art, music and culture.

A place for art and exchange

Since its founding in 2018, the Shizzle cultural association has not only taken care of revitalizing the cultural café, but also realized numerous unforgettable events. A special highlight were the “Wandering Pictures” in 2018 and 2019, an art demonstration that led through the streets of Hernal and featured an open-air concert and a cultural cloakroom. These actions were carried out in collaboration with many partners, including the Hernals district and various cultural initiatives. The list of supporters is long and shows how deeply the cultural café is anchored in the neighborhood.

The association is also the new sponsor of the Kulturnetz Hernals (KNH) forum, which has existed since 2011 and has been known under the leadership of Shizzle since 2017. Exhibitions, concerts, readings, performances, theater, workshops and discussions take place here regularly. A place that continues to offer space for artistic exchange and encounters is of central importance for Hernal's lively cultural scene.

The future remains uncertain

With Shizzle's announced move out, the future of the Kulturcafé is uncertain. Although the association has already announced a general meeting at which the board of directors will be “drastically” changed, this will only come into force from 2026. This means that there is currently a big question mark over the further development of the project.
