EC-KAC loses in an exciting penalty shootout against Pioneers!

What an exciting ice hockey game on November 2nd, 2025! Despite a fighting performance in the away game against the Pioneers in Vorarlberg, the EC-KAC had to end its unbeaten streak away from home. The game started rather modestly and was characterized by many missed opportunities.

The EC-KAC had its first dangerous opportunity in the 6th minute, but David Madlener, the Pioneers' goalkeeper, brilliantly saved the shot. Subsequent attempts, including by David Waschnig and Nathan Bourke, were also unsuccessful. In the 9th minute, Daniel Obersteiner shot too centrally, while Jan Muršak only hit the outside bar in the 13th minute. The Red Jackets barely found their game in the first third break.

Development in the second third

The hosts went on the offensive better in the second third. Mario Kempe tried his luck in the 22nd minute, but the puck just missed. The situation seemed to change when EC-KAC had the opportunity to score the first goal in the 27th minute through three good power play chances, but it was missed.

In the 37th minute the time had actually come: Matt Fraser scored the first goal for the KAC after a pass from Jan Muršak. But despite this lead, luck was not on the Red Jackets' side, and Thomas Hundertpfund was only defeated by Madlener shortly before the end of the third.

Tension in the last third

The last third was a busy time. Casey Dornbach had a chance right at the start that Dahm was able to save. A short time later, in the 45th minute, Nathan Burke managed to equalize for the Pioneers. This goal gave new momentum and the Pioneers now pushed for the lead, but could not find a way past a strong KAC Brazil.

Not much happened until the final minute. Dornbach had a good opportunity in the 57th minute, but failed at the side netting. The game went into extra time, which proved to be nerve-wracking. Florchuk had a great chance right at the start, but it went unused.

The KAC's decisive power play initially brought hope of a victory when Matt Fraser scored a goal, but it was canceled after a video review. In the penalty shootout that followed, only Casey Dornbach was able to put the puck in the net, while the other KAC players came away empty-handed. So the points stayed with the hosts.

The excitement of the game reminded some of the excitement found in a Powerball game, with players able to massively increase their winnings through the Power Play option. In this case it wouldn't be about winning millions, but the same applies in sports: a good hand can sometimes be crucial.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Jackets will be able to resume their series soon. What is certain is that the fighting spirit and motivation are unbroken. For the next games it's time to grit your teeth and keep a cool head, because the EC-KAC is a team that can overcome similar challenges.
