Construction site horror scenarios: Hernals is preparing for massive traffic restrictions!
A lot is currently happening in Vienna's infrastructure, and the future U5 in particular is providing exciting developments. Some fixtures such as water and electricity have to be installed on Hernalser Hauptstrasse before the actual construction work can begin. Hernals residents will have to prepare for restrictions from 2026, when the track laying of line 43 is scheduled to begin in this area. These measures are necessary so that line 43 can continue to run during work on the Elterleinplatz and Hernals stations in 2027, as [NEOS Hernals](https://wien.neos.eu/aktuelles/news/2025/10/wie-wird-das- Werden-mit-dem-bau-der-u5) reports.
Good news for the population: After the construction plans have been approved, information events for residents are being planned. In addition, neighborhood supervisors and ombudspersons are available to answer questions and receive suggestions. The district leader Peter Jagsch also announced a participation process in which residents should be actively involved in the change process.
Modernization of the transport network
Wiener Linien has launched a comprehensive modernization offensive under the motto “Network even more”. One focus is on maintaining and expanding the transport network, with 223 million euros earmarked for investment in 2024 alone. This money goes towards work on tracks, tunnels, bridges and stations to keep the 6th largest tram network in the world running. In the next two years, almost 20 kilometers of track and 100 switches in the tram network will be modernized, although many of these works will hardly be noticeable to passengers, as the City of Vienna informs: wien.gv.at.
Special measures are also on the agenda: Tracks will be laid in Kreuzgasse, Wiedner Hauptstrasse and several other places. The objective is clear: to minimize restrictions for passengers during construction work. As a rule, track construction is carried out at night or during holidays in order to disrupt ongoing operations as little as possible.
Short-term limitations for long-term benefits
It is important that residents understand that despite the short-term inconveniences caused by major construction sites, these measures will bring visible long-term improvements for the entire street. These large-scale construction sites, which are operated in collaboration with other city departments, not only provide high-quality infrastructure, but also improve the quality of life in the affected areas. Residents usually only have a construction site right in front of their door.
The Wiener Linien is committed to increasing passenger comfort and bringing the infrastructure up to date. With clear communication and a transparent participation process, the population should always be informed and included in developments, which promotes positive neighbors and good cooperation.
