Construction site chaos in Vienna: subway tracks will be thoroughly renovated in 2025!

A new chapter in the history of Vienna public transport is opening. From September 22, 2025 the U4 station Landstrasse temporarily closed in Vienna-Mitte. The reason for this is the installation of new flooring while the trains only pass through the station. For commuters this means: Continue one station and change in the opposite direction.

But it's not just the U4 that is being put to the test. Those too U6 station Tscherttegasse is being modernized. Until December 2025, the U6 will only stop in the direction of Siebenhirten and the stop will partially pass through. A changeover option in Meidling is recommended here. For journeys to Floridsdorf, passengers must travel to Schöpfwerk and change there.

Extensive modernizations

As part of the Modernization offensive “Net especially!” Wiener Linien is committed to a comprehensive renovation of the tram network in 2025. The goal is clear: to reduce slow speeds and improve the reliability and safety of the subway and tram network. The focus here is on replacing eleven kilometers of tracks and installing 45 new switches.

The track construction work is taking place on various streets, including Hütteldorfer Straße, Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Kärntner Ring. Investments are also being made in the subway stations: eleven new elevators and twelve modern escalators will be installed here. Wiener Linien is paying particular attention to the U6, which must expect the other platform to be closed in February 2026.

Important restrictions for passengers

However, there are some restrictions until new connections are put into operation. Line 33 will only run between Josefstädter Straße and Jägerstraße on weekends and evenings. In addition, due to track work from September 15th to 30th, 2025, line 5 will only be offered between Praterstern and Josefstädter Straße for a short time. Line 49 is also restricted from October 27th to November 7th, 2025 and will only run between Ring, Volkstheater and Baumgarten.

There is also news on the tram lines: The new line 12, which has been in operation since September 1, 2025, now connects the 8th, 9th, 20th and 2nd districts. Furthermore, line 27 will run from Strebersdorf to the U2 station Aspern Nord from autumn 2025. An extension of tram line 18 is also planned, with track construction work starting in mid-2025 and commissioning in autumn 2026.

For everyone who uses the Wiener Linien, it means: There's something going on! The extensive modernization not only means construction sites and diversions, but also a future-proof design of our public transport.
