Strache as district councilor: successes and renewed concerns about infidelity!

Heinz-Christian Strache, former vice-chancellor and FPÖ chairman, has reported back as district councilor in Floridsdorf in the last few months. In the Vienna election in April 2025, he received 7,245 votes, which corresponds to 1.12% of the electorate. With an annual income of 8,093 euros, Strache takes his new role seriously. He was present at all four meetings of the district parliament and was actively involved. In one of the first meetings, his team, the THC, dealt with the container classes at the Rittingergasse elementary school.

In the budget debate in September, Strache addressed, among other things, an urgent problem: the elevator in a Floridsdorf underground car park, which has been broken since 2014. His motion to examine and remedy the grievances in the Karl Seitz Garage received broad support, apart from the Greens. Strache sees this active role as an “honorable task”, even if he is struggling with legal problems.

Legal challenges

He is again before the Vienna Criminal Court for breach of trust, although he was previously acquitted. This involves money from an FPÖ life insurance policy. Strache emphasizes that he has done nothing illegal and does not see himself as responsible for party funds. However, he could face a severe sentence of up to ten years in prison, although the presumption of innocence applies.

A shadow of the past

The history of Strache's political career includes the scandalous Ibiza incident that made headlines on May 17, 2019. A secretly recorded video shows Strache and Johann Gudenus in a compromising conversation about possible election support and government contracts. The scandal led to the dissolution of the government under Sebastian Kurz and new elections. Strache resigned due to pressure and was later convicted of corruption, despite initial claims that the video did not prove illegal activity. The incident not only had a lasting impact on Strache's career, but also on the political climate in Austria, as the reporting in the Wiener Zeitung shows.

Corruption in Austria

The political environment in which Strache operates is characterized by ongoing concerns about corruption. According to Transparency International's index, Austria delivered a worrying performance in 2023 and landed in 20th place - a decline of two places since 2018. The negative trend is attributed, among other things, to scandals, clientelism and political influence on the media. Bettina Knötzl from TI-Austria described the situation as “shameful”. Experts like Martin Kreutner also warn that the population's trust in the institutions is being shaken.

According to ORF, calls for more transparency and independent supervision have become louder. The SPÖ and NEOS are calling for concrete steps to combat corruption, and the incoming government is called upon to improve the situation so that trust can be restored.

Strache's return to politics may seem somewhat remarkable at the moment, but it is embedded in a much larger picture of political scandals and an urgent need for reform. What the future holds remains to be seen.
