Life imprisonment for the cruel murder of a 91-year-old in Floridsdorf!

In a shocking case of violence and cruelty, a man has been sentenced to life in prison after confessing to killing and raping a 91-year-old woman in her own home. The trial and the perpetrator's apparently well-thought-out approach caused a great stir in Vienna. The defendant accepted the verdict and would like to serve his sentence in Austria. How nachrichten.at reported, he was admitted to a forensic therapeutic center due to his dangerousness in accordance with Section 21 Paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code.

The background is just as frightening as the crime itself. The perpetrator committed a murder at the age of 20 by throwing a man into a well and received a twelve-year prison sentence for it. After his release, he returned to Austria in 2008, where he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for attacks on several women, including a 95-year-old who lost the sight in one eye. He was last released in Slovakia in January 2024 and returned to Vienna four months later, where he searched for victims again. He had chosen allotment settlements so that he could strike undisturbed.

The cruel act

The defendant planned the attack on the 91-year-old after observing her for some time. In a perfidious move, he broke into her house with a pair of tongs and lit fires while attacking her in the bedroom. When the woman began to scream, he suffocated her and also committed other acts of abuse. In the end he took 150 euros and two rings from those killed. He was quickly identified thanks to fingerprints and DNA traces.

He was arrested in Slovakia on September 21 and extradited to Austria in October. A psychiatric report revealed that the perpetrator suffered from antisocial personality disorder and was considered very dangerous. The public prosecutor's verdict was therefore clear and they requested that he be placed in a forensic therapeutic center.

Crime statistics are changing

The horrific news surrounding this case highlights the challenges that Austrian society faces when it comes to crime. The police crime statistics (PKS) record and analyze the development of criminal events in order to enable well-founded planning of criminal police measures. The Federal Criminal Police Office states that the PKS has been registering all reported cases electronically since 2001 and using them to effectively combat crime.

These and similar incidents contribute to questioning the public's trust in security. The PKS not only provides numbers, but also allows conclusions to be drawn about social phenomena. It remains to be hoped that such tragic events will at least lead to a better understanding of the recurring patterns of criminals and to take appropriate preventive measures.
