Copa Cruise closes season: A farewell to the Danube Island and island sheep!

The summer months are over, and on the Danube Island it's time to look back again. The season ended on October 26th Copa Cruise, the popular ferry boat that is impressive this season6,700 passengerspromoted and thereby overall5,500 kilometersput back. With its sustainable energy supply through solar panels, the electrically powered island boat has played an important role in the development of the Danube island, which is connected via four stations.

Particularly noteworthy is the return of theIsland sheep, who have been grazing in the natural north of the island since 2019 and thus care for the meadows11 hectarescontribute. These sheep promote biodiversity with their selective feeding behavior, which is of great benefit not only for the flora but also for the fauna of the island. Bicycle tours to the island sheep are therefore very popular and offer a unique opportunity to experience nature up close.

Season highlights and new attractions

The summer on the Danube Island was characterized by numerous leisure activities. The mobile island teams were active and celebrated from April to the end of September15th anniversarywith impressive100,000 kilometers traveled. These teams not only provide information and first aid kits, but also contribute to the cleanliness and leisure activities on the island. The home base is conveniently located in the island information center near the Reichsbrücke. City councilor Ulli Sima praised the commitment of the employees, who make the island a leisure place worth living in.

A new highlight is the course onnew “Pier 22”, which recently opened. With a total14 works of art, which deal with earth, water, air and light, it becomes a cultural attraction. In addition, a new playground with a sand play area and a climbing world awaits little visitors. The Café Pier 22 remains open all year round and surprises with coffee from its own roastery, while the Liesingbach, which is above9 kilometershas been renatured and offers the opportunity for relaxing walks.

Outlook for the coming season

Looking ahead, the Danube Island has not only enjoyed the last hours of sunshine of the season. Spring also marks the start of the new leisure season in 2026, when the Copa Cruise expected to set sail again on April 18th. Visitors can then look forward to a diverse leisure program and the return of the charming island sheep, who will once again ensure a well-kept lawn. A further 9.2 kilometers of renaturation of the Liesingbach are planned by 2027 - a further sign of the continuous commitment to nature and the environment in the heart of Vienna.

Overall, the Danube Island offers a place for relaxation and adventure, and the coming months are sure to attract many visitors who want to experience nature and art in harmony. Looking back at the summer season shows that there will also be a lot to offer in the future.
