Table tennis: BG Pichelmayergasse starts its school Olympic adventure!

The Austrian school year has just begun, and in Favoriten people are already full of enthusiasm. The Austrian Table Tennis Association’s “Get to the Table” school sports initiative is now starting at various schools, and the BG/BRG Pichelmayergasse is one of the first to take on this challenge. How meinkreis.at reports, the students have the chance to train specifically for the school Olympics in table tennis, which will take place in the Vienna Stadthalle in March 2026.

“Get to the table” aims to actively promote young talent in table tennis and discover talent. Mag. Michael Zottl, the state sports representative for table tennis, who has been in charge of table tennis activities at the school for eight years now, has taken important steps for participation in this school sports initiative. His focus is not only on the sports units, but also on the development of the students. “We not only want to teach the children the technique of the game, but also encourage their sporting behavior,” emphasizes Zottl.

Talent development and training

Gustav Jirka, who leads the table tennis units, has already discovered the first talents at the school. The first viewing session took place on September 19th, in which 20 students were able to take part. In the future, two additional training hours per week are planned to promote further talent. The trainer also plans further units in order to better assess the students' individual abilities. The focus is not only on techniques, but also on team spirit and fair play.

The School Olympics are an exciting event that takes place every two years and is considered a national school championship in table tennis. Only schools that qualify through state championships are allowed to take part in this championship. The defending champions are the Christian Doppler Gymnasium, the MS Zwettl and the BRG Oberpullendorf. All information about tournament procedures and results is available on the official school sports website, which is aimed specifically at students from all over Austria. The website also offers an overview of the participating schools and teams as well as exciting highlights of the competitions, such as oettv.org reported.
