BSA Bundestag 2025: Carinthia’s voice for freedom and democracy!

On October 11, 2025, the 54th Bundestag of the Association of Social Democratic Academics, Intellectuals and Artists (BSA) took place in Vienna. Under the motto “Freedom of Thought – Strength of Democracy”, 115 delegates from all federal states gathered to discuss the importance of critical thinking and democratic values. The invitations were sent to around 150 invited guests, which underlines the lively participation. The representation of Carinthia with five delegates, including the state chairman Roland Mathiesl and district chairman Adi Lackner, was particularly pleasing meinkreis.at reports.

Among the guests of honor were prominent politicians such as Federal Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig and State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. BSA President Dr. Andreas Mailath-Pokorny opened the event and presented the political framework and objectives of the Bundestag. His re-election with over 96 percent of the vote shows the support in the organization.

Democracy and critical thinking

The motto of the Bundestag reflects the challenges our society faces. Democracy is more than just a system of laws and elections; it requires active commitment and solidarity. Increasing polarization and populist rhetoric are putting freedom of thought under pressure. The BSA therefore strongly advocates for spaces in which free thinking and critical discussions are required. It is emphasized that a healthy democratic environment should definitely include freedom of science and art, as bsa.at also points out.

During the speeches it became clear that the BSA demands protection against political influence and public defamation. This commitment shows that democratic education and values education are important not only in schools, but in society as a whole. This specifically addresses the need for respect in dealing with one another, participation and finding compromises, which are also anchored in the education sector, as the Bildungsserver shows.

Commitment to the future

The Bundestag in Vienna proves that democracy and education go hand in hand. The participation of the delegates from Spittal symbolized their commitment to democracy and social cohesion. There are more than 30 active members in Spittal an der Drau who are committed to these goals. This initiative is further proof that the issues of education, dialogue and solidarity are crucial to promote social participation and support a pluralistic society.
