On Sunday night, a spectacular traffic accident occurred in Vienna-Favoriten, which made residents sit up and take notice. At around 1 a.m., a 37-year-old man drove his car with a blood alcohol concentration of 1.4 per mille on Raxstrasse in the direction of Triester Strasse. The consequences of his driving were anything but harmless.

After crossing an intersection, the drunk driver lost control of his vehicle and sped across a sidewalk into a nearby park. There was a collision with a park bench. But that was just the beginning of his rapid journey. He continued his tour on Eschenallee, drove around another park bench and collided head-on with two parked vehicles. This resulted in a truck being thrown across Eschenallee by the force of the impact. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured, while his passenger suffered minor injuries.

Drunk driving: A sad outcome

Drunk driving is a burning issue that is always in the headlines. The incident in Favoriten is not an isolated case. According to that ÖAMTC There were a total of 2,705 alcohol-related accidents with personal injury in Austria in 2024, which represents a slight increase compared to 2023. These accidents accounted for over 7% of all road accidents resulting in personal injury, with a sad result: 30 people lost their lives and more than 3,000 were injured.

The legal limit for alcohol content is less than 0.5 per mille. For certain drivers, such as truck and bus drivers and those on probation, there is even a stricter limit of 0.1 per mille. What many people don't know is that there are massive penalties for values ​​between 0.5 and 0.79 per mille, even if you drive under 0.8 per mille. Only at higher values ​​will the driving license be revoked or more stringent follow-up training will be imposed.

Driving license revocation and financial consequences

The irresponsible use of alcohol on the road not only has legal consequences. The ÖAMTC also warns that liability insurance companies can claim back up to 11,000 euros from drunk drivers who cause accidents. If the alcohol content is 1.4 per mille, as in the case of the driver in Favoriten, there are penalties of 1,200 to 4,400 euros and a driving license revocation of at least four months.

A current statistic from Statista shows that the problem of drunk driving in Austria has been going on for years and will continue to be relevant in 2025. This sad reality increases people's awareness of taking responsibility in road traffic - so that such dramatic accidents as in Vienna-Favoriten do not occur.
