Vienna's new cycle highway: Faster, safer and greener access to the surrounding area!

On July 17, 2025, a new “cycle highway” was opened in Vienna, which is intended to offer cyclists more freedom of movement and safety in the city. The impressive route stretches over seven kilometers and is 4.4 meters wide. It begins at Urania and leads over the Aspernbrücke, Praterstrasse, Praterstern, Lassallestrasse and Wagramer Strasse to Kagraner Platz and finally ends at Langen Felde. This new connection will link three districts together, making cycling from the city to the Danube city significantly safer and more comfortable. reports the Crown.

City Councilor for Transport Ulli Sima was enthusiastic at the opening and described the cycle highway as an important step in a comprehensive cycle path offensive. In the last five years, almost 100 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure has been built in Vienna. What is particularly noteworthy is that a lane for motorized traffic was removed on Praterstrasse in order to offer cyclists more space. At the same time, dangerous areas were defused to further increase the safety of cyclists.

Green space and environmental protection

In parallel with the creation of this new infrastructure, there are also ecological advances. Along the new route, 30,000 square meters were unsealed and 16,000 square meters were planted, which makes a significant contribution to improving the city's climate. In addition, around 200 new trees were planted. By September 2025, Vienna's first street park will be built on Wagramer Straße at 250 meters with around 40 trees, which will further enhance the local area.

Further improvements in the cycle path network

However, the cycling initiative is not just limited to the new cycle highway. In keeping with the cycle path offensive, there are numerous improvements throughout the city. For example, the traffic situation for cyclists will be significantly improved at many intersections and streets, such as Schellinggasse and Schwarzenbergstrasse or the Dominikanerbastei. Bicycle Vienna lists numerous projects that aim to create greater safety and comfort for cyclists. Work is being done on existing cycle paths and new cycle fords are being created in various places throughout the city.

The future of cycling in Vienna looks promising. With the opening of the cycle highway and the ongoing improvements to the cycle path network, the city is well on the way to increasing sustainable transport and the attractiveness of cycling. This makes Vienna an even more attractive place for cyclists - and this not only benefits the environment, but also the citizens.
