HTL Donaustadt inspires in the Zero Emission Challenge: fought for 8th place!

The HTL Donaustadt did well in the “Zero Emission Challenge” competition and gained valuable experience in the field of electromobility. For the first time, the school took part in this exciting event on October 22nd and 23rd, 2025, which took place at the TGM, the HTL Wien 20. A total of around 400 participants from 20 schools took part - a new record for this contest. The students of the HTL Donaustadt were able to secure 8th place in the dynamic competition and in the overall ranking they achieved a respectable 12th place. The event is hosted by MyDistrict considered a success.

Insights into the challenges of electromobility

Under the leadership of Prof. Andreas Wolfgruber, the students were able to demonstrate their skills in designing, manufacturing and optimizing an e-kart. The focus was not only on technical skills such as drive technology, driving dynamics and safety technology, but also on important soft skills such as project management and teamwork. Gerhard Weninger, the department head and co-organizer of the Zero Emission Challenge, emphasizes that these activities strengthen cooperation between schools, universities and industrial partners. The event was supported by well-known companies such as MAGNA, BRP Rotax and SKF as well as the ÖAMTC and the police.

The competition itself included exciting disciplines such as acceleration, slalom and skidpad, which were carried out on a 7.7 km long circuit. The teams had to show how quickly they could accelerate their vehicles over short distances and maneuver through winding roads. The Zero Emission Challenge aims to promote young talent in the field of e-mobility and emphasize the importance of practical learning in the context of environmental awareness and sustainable technology.

A step into the future

The HTL Donaustadt already has plans to take part in this competition again in 2026. Preparations for this are in full swing. This not only shows the commitment of the students, but also the educational institution's commitment to providing the next generation with the best possible training in electromobility. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr did not miss the opportunity to congratulate the participants on site and praised their commitment and performance.

Overall, it is clear that electromobility plays a central role in Austria's transport policy. The federal government has set itself ambitious goals to reduce transport emissions by 40 to 42 percent by 2030. Supported by ambitious initiatives such as the Zero Emission Challenge, education, innovation and sustainable transport solutions come together in an impressive way. Information about electromobility and its importance can also be found on the website Fraunhofer ISI, where numerous research projects have led to the development of new mobility concepts and business models.

The commitment of the HTL Donaustadt and the support from well-known industrial partners are proof that the conscious use of resources and the training of young talent go hand in hand. The Zero Emission Challenge has not only fostered the spirit of competition, but also the spirit of cooperation, innovation and sustainability. We can only hope that the experiences from this competition will continue to drive forward the development of emission-free mobility in the future.
