Borealis is investing 100 million euros in sustainable production in Burghausen

A lot is happening at Borealis, the subsidiary of the Austrian oil company OMV. Dr. Stefan Doboczky, CEO of the company, is satisfied with the 2024 financial year. Sales have increased by around 10 percent to over 8 billion euros, which represents pleasing progress for the Viennese company. Doboczky, who has been in office since July 2024, attaches particular importance to ensuring that Borealis is well positioned in Europe and at the same time announces investments in expanding capacities that will further strengthen the company.

A significant investment of over 100 million euros will go into expanding the production line for recyclable, foam-based polypropylene in Burghausen, Germany. This new product line will increase the capacity for the innovative Daploy™ material, which is light, strong and fully recyclable, three times. The technology behind it was developed at the Borealis Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria and is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2026. Daploy™ is fully in line with the company's sustainable strategy and reduces both waste and carbon emissions, which is a clear step towards environmental friendliness for Borealis.

Innovations in the plastics industry

In an ever-changing market, the demand for environmentally friendly materials is higher than ever. The plastics industry has recognized that sustainable solutions and recycling technologies are essential. Events such as the INDUSTRY.forward EXPO, which recently took place from May 15 to 21, 2025, therefore address digital approaches and alternative raw materials. Here, experts present future-oriented innovations that help companies produce more resource-efficiently. The “Smart Plastics” focus block highlights current developments in the industry and shows what new possibilities are available.

Borealis is proud to be at the forefront of these developments with over 12,000 patents and as a leading provider of sustainable polyolefin solutions. The company's net profit in 2024 was a whopping 566 million euros, and with more than 6,200 employees at its headquarters in Vienna and the production facility in Burghausen, where around 250 people are employed, Borealis is not only a major employer, but also a driving factor in innovative plastics production in Austria and beyond.

The close connection to partner ADNOC, which holds 25 percent of the shares, and the solid control by OMV with 75 percent underline the company's strategic orientation. At a time when the industry is increasingly moving towards sustainability, Borealis is well equipped to meet market challenges while offering environmentally friendly products.

Be that as it may, the focus remains clear: innovation and sustainability lie at the heart of Borealis' strategy. The current investments and developments clearly show that the company has a good knack for setting the course for the future.
