World Savings Day: Sparefroh-Haus celebrates 70 years of gifts and savings tradition!
On October 31st it's that time again: World Savings Day is just around the corner! In Vienna, the Saprefroh House on Alsergrund is celebrating twice: almost 100 years of World Savings Day and 70 years of Sparefroh are being duly honored here. Renate Steinkellner, the manager of the house, has amassed an impressive collection of gifts that have been distributed over the last seven decades. This can be found in the Alsergrund District Museum, located at Währinger Straße 43, and offers an exciting insight into the tradition of saving.
Not only gifts from candles to tea to modern computer gifts testify to the changeability of the spirit of saving, nostalgic money boxes and other Sparefroh figures also make the exhibition particularly worth seeing. Steinkellner is particularly proud of a golden Sparefroh that was presented to former mayor Helmut Zilk for his services to financial education. A truly brilliant piece!
Savings story and gifts
World Savings Day, which was founded in 1925, has changed a little over time. In the past, small gifts were mainly distributed on this day to increase savings incentives. However, Renate Steinkellner has noticed a trend that has overturned all savings habits in recent years: people are increasingly saving digitally. As of 2022, there are no longer any physical gifts, instead donations are made instead of money, which represents another step into the future.
The idea for World Savings Day was originally born at the 1st International Savings Banks Congress in Milan in October 1924. The congress brought together delegates from 27 countries and promoted the idea of savings. Over the last thirty years, World Savings Day has declined in importance in many industrialized nations, while it is encouragingly increasing in emerging countries.
