Viennese wildlife: discover unexpected habitats in the big city!

Vienna, a city full of cultural treasures, not only delights its residents but also attracts a variety of wildlife. A new documentary written by Martin Mészáros and produced by Tim Carlberg provides a fascinating insight into the lives of these animals. The film team accompanied fascinating creatures such as mandarin duck chicks, peacock moths, ground squirrels and field hamsters for over a year to document their habitats in the city. These unexplored corners of Vienna are not only idyllic retreats, but also highlight the important role of nature within the urban environment. NDR/Terra Mater Studios, in particular Georg and Verena Popp-Hacker, provided the visual implementation of this nature film.

Wild animals in the big city

Vienna offers habitat for more than 70 species of mammals, including fox, badger, raccoon, and wild boar. These animals have adapted to urban conditions and can be found in gardens, parks and even cemeteries. The city grants its wild neighbors around 318 hectares of green space, which corresponds to around a sixth of the entire city area. Not only large wild animals live here, but also smaller species such as ground squirrels and brown hares. Between January 2019 and October 2021, over 4,150 wild animals were sighted, with the most common sighting report involving the fox - with 464 sightings. Green space policy promotes wilderness-like developments and biological processes that enable animals to live a better life.

This ecological diversity contributes to the unique “magic” of Vienna. Not only people, but also animals benefit from the diverse habitats that the city offers. The climatic conditions, including mild winters with higher humidity, support the survival and growth of young animals.
