Wiener Linien: New photovoltaic facade revolutionizes the U6 station!
The Wiener Linien sets another milestone in sustainable energy supply. The first photovoltaic system integrated into a glass facade was put into operation at the eastern entrance to the Floridsdorf U6 station. Through the collaboration with Wien Energie, it was possible to integrate the modern translucent photovoltaic cells into the facade in such a way that they both allow daylight into the building and generate energy. Around 60% of the facade is designed for electricity production and as shading, which is not only environmentally friendly but also improves the feel-good climate in the subway station.
The new system was activated in June 2025 and had produced over 120,000 kilowatt hours of electricity by the end of September. A look at the numbers shows: In July, the systems covered around 60% of the electricity required on site. Especially on sunny days, more energy is produced than is needed for lighting, lifts and escalators. The excess electricity flows directly to neighboring subway stations - a real benefit for the entire infrastructure.
Technical details and overall effects
A total of 685 photovoltaic modules were installed both on the roof of the station and on a neighboring operational building, with a total output of around 260 kilowatt peak (kWp). Thanks to this environmentally friendly initiative, around a third of the Floridsdorf station's annual electricity requirements can be covered. “This is a big step towards a more sustainable Vienna,” explains a spokesman for Wiener Linien.
Since 2020, Wiener Linien has already built 27 solar power plants on various public transport areas. Together, these produce around 5.7 million kilowatt hours annually, which is enough to supply around 2,850 Viennese households with green electricity for a year. In this way, Wiener Linien not only makes a contribution to the energy transition, but also promotes awareness of green technologies in the city.
A look into the future
The photovoltaic system at the Floridsdorf station is just the beginning of a series of planned projects that are intended to make Vienna's public transport system more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. In addition to energy generation, Wiener Linien also relies on innovative mobility solutions to meet the growing demands of a modern city.
In a world where sustainability is very important, the Wiener Linien impressively shows how progress and environmental protection can be combined. Let's look forward to the next steps in the development of Vienna's infrastructure - one thing is already certain: a good hand is being demonstrated here!
