Vienna relies on green mobility: emission-free crane for construction sites!
A lot is happening in Vienna in the area of sustainable mobility. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce’s “Zero Emission Transport” (ZET) project is well on its way to promoting emission-free deliveries. Since June 2024, 43 companies have already committed to organizing their transport without emitting harmful substances. This is a clear step in the right direction for a greener future.
Christian Holzhauser, chairman of the transport and traffic division at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, underlines the importance of this initiative. “Sustainable delivery must be the focus,” he says, focusing on the positive effects for the city and the environment. The trading company Frankstahl from Guntramsdorf has recently purchased a fully electric truck with a loading crane. The new vehicle, a Mitsubishi Fuso with an enormous 124 kWh battery, enables a range of around 200 kilometers and thus offers a practical solution for environmentally friendly transport.
The path to emission-free mobility
Developments in the area of sustainable mobility are not only important locally. The challenges are clearly ahead of us: limited ranges and high acquisition costs often do not make things easy for providers. Nevertheless, a study by Fraunhofer ISE shows that the market shares of electric and hybrid vehicles have increased in recent years - from 1.8% to 2.6% by mid-2019. That's a good sign!
In order to further reduce CO2 emissions, strategies such as car sharing, the expansion of local public transport and the digital networking of vehicles are on the agenda. At the same time, the use of alternative drive types such as battery drives and fuel cells is becoming increasingly important. These technical innovations are a right step towards shaping the mobility of the future.
Technological challenges and solutions
As the history of useful concepts like “0” in mathematics shows, our societal challenges often have simple solutions. Nevertheless, we have to find creative approaches to sustainable mobility in order to overcome the technical hurdles. Whether the expansion of the charging infrastructure or innovative ideas for extending the range – it takes a good hand and joint efforts from politics and business to achieve the goal.
Through projects like ZET, residents and companies in Vienna have the opportunity to actively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. The signs are green, not just in transport policy, but also in the public's consciousness. Every zero-emission van that rolls through the city is a step towards a sustainable future.
