Traffic jam chaos on the A23: hidden routes and tips for commuters!
The traffic situation on the Vienna Südosttangente (A23) is currently tense. Renovation work leads to a significant loss of time until mid-November. Drivers have to expect longer travel times, especially on weekends, when route opening is restricted from 10 p.m. on Fridays to 5 a.m. on Mondays. The ramp at the Vienna-Kaisermühlen junction is currently closed in the southbound direction, so only one lane is available at night. During the day, two lanes continue south towards Vienna-Inzersdorf, while three lanes remain open to the north. According to Kosmo, these restrictions result in kilometer-long traffic jams, so that road users have to expect up to an hour of additional travel time.
The situation becomes even more complicated because construction work is taking place at the Vösendorf junction from Saturday 12:00 p.m. to Monday 5:00 a.m. The exits from the A21 and S1 on the A2 towards Graz are not passable, which means that a detour via the Shopping City Süd and the Mödling junction is necessary. Drivers should use the recommended alternative routes such as Wagramer Straße or Reichsbrücke to avoid the traffic jam, recommends the ARBÖ.
Renovation measures on the A23
The renovation work on the A23, which extends between the Prater junction and the Handelskai junction, is part of a long-term project. The “New Tangent” initiative has been running for 15 years and has become necessary due to the enormous traffic volume on this route. The A23, as Austria's most important traffic artery, sees around 230,000 vehicles per day. According to ASFINAG, all lanes should remain open during the renovation in order to minimize traffic jams.
The renovation itself is divided into several phases. The construction site is initially entered from the right-hand side, followed by work in the middle and finally on the left-hand side of the road. A color coding system is used to make it easier for drivers to find their way around the construction site. In addition, ASFINAG has announced that special traffic managers will be available to monitor traffic flow during rush hour.
A sustainable solution for transport
Another focus is on the sustainability of this renovation. The work includes resurfacing road surfaces and using 20 percent recycled asphalt, and damaged parts of the steel retention system will also be replaced. From June 23, 2026, after completion of the work in the north direction, the renovation in the south direction will begin, followed by further measures at the Prater and Handelskai junctions.
News and current traffic situation data are available via EVIS. The platform, which is operated by ASFINAG and other authorities, ensures that residents and travelers are always informed about the condition of the roads.
