On the trail of cancer: Vienna invites you to the exclusive Cancer School 2025!

On October 3, 2025, the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Vienna of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital invites you to the popular Cancer School series. The aim of this series of events is to offer patients and their relatives valuable information about cancer, to strengthen personal contact with experts and to increase knowledge about diagnoses and treatments. This year, participants can look forward to an exciting program with exclusive insights into areas of oncology that were not previously accessible to the public, including the University Clinic for Radiation Oncology and the new south ward building of the Vienna General Hospital. MedUni Vienna reports that the Management team members, including Gabriela Kornek and Johannes Gojo, contribute to making the events a valuable source of information.

The Cancer School offers four seminars on common cancers, including lung, breast, colon and prostate cancer. The first dates are set for November 4, 2025 (lung cancer) and December 2, 2025 (breast cancer). For colon and prostate cancer, the seminars will follow on March 25, 2026 and June 2, 2026. In addition, exclusive tours of the University Clinic for Radiation Oncology, the new south ward building and the hospital pharmacy of the Vienna General Hospital will be offered, which interested citizens can take advantage of. The focus in the hospital pharmacy is, among other things, on the production of cytostatics and immunotherapeutics.

A wide range of information and services

Another highlight is the precautionary day, which is planned for February 15, 2025. This takes place in the Van Swieten Saal at Van Swieten Gasse 1a and offers valuable information about prevention and early detection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free HPV vaccination offers are available for everyone up to their 30th birthday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each participant should bring their vaccination certificate, e-card and ID with them. Various lectures offer insight into topics ranging from “Fighting cancer with healthy behavior” to specific cancers and their early detection.

The HPV vaccination plays a central role in this. This virus is responsible for nearly 100 percent of cervical cancer cases and can occur in approximately 85 to 90 percent of sexually active people during their lifetime. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of genital warts and cervical cancer, indicating the importance of this measure. Frauenaerzte im Netz draws attention to the fact that regular smears and an HPV vaccination are essential steps for prevention.

Together for prevention

The connection between HPV and cervical cancer is extremely important, especially given the alarming rates of the disease. The joint initiative “DECISION. Against Cancer” is actively committed to raising awareness and encourages people to focus on the HPV vaccination. To further support these measures, several events are planned for the coming year, including a research focus as part of the Long Night of Research on April 24, 2026.

Overall, the Cancer School series shows how important it is to advance knowledge and education about cancer. The MedUni Vienna not only offers specialist lectures and individual advice, but also the opportunity to talk to experts directly on site. The fight against cancer is a shared cause that requires a strong community.
