Kilometers of traffic jams after a serious truck accident on the S1 near Vösendorf

An unexpected traffic jam caused significant traffic disruptions on the Vienna Outer Ring Expressway (S1) on Friday, September 26, 2025. At 1:30 p.m. there was an accident involving four trucks and a car. This incident led to the Vösendorf tunnel being closed in the direction of Schwechat for several hours. One injured person was reported in the accident, which further strained the situation.

The closure had far-reaching consequences: Despite a comparatively low volume of traffic, vehicles were jammed on the motorway (A21) for eight kilometers from Vösendorf to well beyond Gießhübl. There were also delays on the Süd Autobahn (A2) from Wiener Neudorf, while the diversion route via the Südost Tangente (A23) was also not spared from traffic jams. The rescue work continued until late in the afternoon and put additional strain on traffic.

Technical defects and quick reactions

Parallel to this incident, the Schwechat Volunteer Fire Department was also alerted on the same day. A burning truck was reported on the S1 around 12:30 p.m. On site it turned out that it was not a dramatic full-scale fire. A technical defect, probably in the brake of one of the trailer's tires, led to overheating and the development of smoke. Thanks to the rapid action of the fire brigade, something worse was prevented.

The emergency services cooled the affected brake with a thermal imaging camera and ensured that the truck was safely escorted off the highway and parked in a safe location. Ultimately, the tire was checked with a quick attack device to prevent it from overheating again. These quick measures contributed to the safety of all road users and prevented potentially risky situations.

Road safety in focus

The incidents on the S1 shed light on the importance of road safety and the role of infrastructure. How Autobahn.de reports, various factors are crucial for safety on the roads. This includes, among other things, good traffic education and modern vehicle technologies that minimize the risk of accidents.

Modern driver assistance systems, such as automatic braking systems or turning assistants, significantly increase safety. The infrastructure itself also has to be right: planning in accordance with guidelines and daily road operations are essential to ensure that road use is safe.

In view of today's incidents, it is to be hoped that such traffic jams and serious accidents such as the one on the S1 can be avoided in the future. This requires both technical measures and a sense of responsibility from all road users.
