Steirereck in Vienna: Austria's only restaurant in the TOP 50!
On Thursday evening, the renowned list of the "The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025" was published in Turin, Piedmont. The Steirereck in Vienna again caused a stir, even if the Austrian culinary sky shines a little pale than in the past few years. The restaurant led by Birgit and Heinz Reitbauer took 33th place and is the only Austrian restaurant that made it onto the list.
The Styrianeck has long been a fixture among the top restaurants, but had a decline in long-term comparison: in 2024 it was still in 22nd and 2023 in 18th place. This decline is reflected in the overall ranking, because the list is determined by the votes of 1,120 culinary experts, including chefs and food journalists. It is gratifying that the Steirereck has been saying a permanent place in this illustrious society for years.
The competition of the best
The big winner this year is the Maido in Lima, Peru , which puts first place and thus puts one of the few Peruvian restaurants under the top 10. It is considered a pioneer of modern Peruvian cuisine. The previous year's champions from the "Disfrutar" in Barcelona did not remain at the forefront, but are still a pleasure!
The list itself includes a total of restaurants in 37 cities on six continents. Europe not only dominated with 20 entries, but also brings some new additions. Interestingly, German gastronomy also surprised again, because Tim Raue's restaurant ranks 58 this year, while Nobelhart & Schmutzig and Tantris follow in places 59 and 73. Such rankings are immensely valuable for gastronomy - they not only help with the attractiveness of the restaurant, but also with worldwide awareness.
