On Thursday evening in Turin, Piedmont, the prestigious list of “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025” was published. It could do that Steirereck in Vienna once again causing a stir, even if the Austrian culinary sky shines a little paler than in previous years. The restaurant run by Birgit and Heinz Reitbauer came in 33rd place this year, making it the only Austrian restaurant to make it onto the list.
The Steirereck has long been a fixture among the top restaurants, but has seen a decline in a long-term comparison: in 2024 it was in 22nd place and in 2023 it was even in 18th place. This decline is reflected in the overall ranking, because the list is determined by the votes of 1,120 culinary experts, including chefs and food journalists. It is gratifying that the Steirereck has maintained a firm place in this illustrious society for years.
The competition of the best
The big winner this year is this Maido in Lima, Peru, which takes first place, making it one of the few Peruvian restaurants in the top 10. It is considered a pioneer of modern Peruvian cuisine. Last year's champions from “Disfrutar” in Barcelona didn't stay at the top, but they are still a real treat!
The list itself includes a total of restaurants in 37 cities on six continents. Not only did Europe dominate with 20 entries, but it also brought some new additions. Interestingly, German gastronomy also surprised again, as Tim Raue's restaurant is ranked 58th this year, while Nobelhart & Dirtig and Tantris follow in 59th and 73rd place. Such rankings are immensely valuable for the catering industry - they not only help with the attractiveness of the restaurant, but also with its worldwide recognition.

Although Steirereck has dropped one place in the rankings this year, its long history and distinctive style show that it remains an unrivaled culinary institution in Vienna. The challenge of asserting oneself in international competition remains exciting and gives cause for hope for the coming years.
