Söder's sausage diplomacy: Bratwurst meeting in Vienna and border disputes!
Wien, Österreich - In bright sunshine, Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder caused a sensation in Vienna on Thursday. Under the motto "sausage diplomacy" he met with the Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in the Federal Chancellery. A good lunch, consisting of bratwurst with mustard, could not be missing. The two politicians addressed themselves at the meeting by "DU" and found many similarities, despite the challenges that the relationship between Bavaria and Austria is currently burdening. BILD reports that Söder already has experience with the type of diplomacy, after in December 2022 in Prague with the Czech Prime Minister and a week earlier in Warsaw with Poland's prime minister organized a similar culinary meeting.
Unlike the sausage meal, however, the current political issues are anything but informal. Border controls in particular are increasingly preparing Austria and Germany. Since May 2023, Germany has rejected migrants on the border with Austria, which leads to considerable difficulties for Austria. Chancellor Stocker expressed that border controls were sometimes necessary and called a temporary solution in this context.border controls in focus
The strict border controls, which were introduced under the new federal government, also caused a lot of discussion. Especially in recent times, 19 asylum seekers have been rejected at the German borders within two days. Tagesschau reports that the federal police registered a total of 365 unauthorized entry over two days, 286 migrants were rejected. According to Söder, the border controls are a “massive entry” into a new migration policy.
The Bavarian Prime Minister also announced further measures to stop a stop of flights from Afghanistan and changes in citizenship law. However, criticism of the measures cannot be discussed: parties such as the Greens and Left see the controls as a violation of EU law. Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk also expressed his concerns and accused the Federal Government to roam the Schengen system.
dispute over trucks and block dismissals
Not only ascending asylum policy causes tensions, the dispute over the block handling on the Inntal motorway also makes waves. Tyrol has severely limited the number of trucks that are allowed to go to Italy, which has led to the Bavarian side of up to 50 kilometers. Söder said that these measures violated European law, while Stocker described them as a necessary emergency measure. A previously discussed "slot system" has not been implemented so far, and Söder criticized the federal governments in recent years for delays in the negotiations.
So there is a lot going on in the political arena, and the "sausage diplomacy" experience between Söder and Stocker may only be a small part of the big picture. When he returned to the airport in Vienna, a machine of the Bundeswehr flight willingness to Söder, accompanied by Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul, was also waiting in the city and symbolizes another document of the political connections between Germany and Austria. The future of relationships between Bavaria and Austria remains exciting, especially with regard to the pressing topics of migration policy and border controls. A closer cooperation and an open ear for each other could be the key to the next "sausage".
