Natural swimming spots around Vienna: The best tips for hot summer days!
Summer is in full swing and is the perfect time to explore the refreshing waters around Vienna. A new book by Nathalie and Marion Großschädl highlights the most attractive wild swimming spots in Eastern Austria, and today we take a look at some highlights that not only promise relaxing moments, but also offer real alternatives compared to conventional swimming pools.
With bright sunshine and 34 degrees, the possibilities for a day at the beach are almost endless. The authors have published two volumes: the first covers wine, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, while the second part covers other areas such as Upper Austria. This week we focus on five special places that you shouldn't miss.
Trasdorf bathing pond
A real gem is the Trasdorf bathing pond, which has an impressive area of over three hectares and a water depth of up to five meters. Even ground squirrels live here! Dogs are not allowed on the lawn, but the Beach Bar awaits visitors with a tempting selection of breakfast variations and regional specialties. The water quality is checked regularly, which ensures worry-free bathing pleasure. Getting there is easy with the S 40 from Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, followed by a short five-minute walk.
Top natural swimming spots in the area
However, the book does not just show one place. It's worth discovering other natural seaside resorts around Vienna. These include the numerous offers in the Alte Donau with their free swimming and sunbathing areas. Regional restaurants and boat rentals provide additional comfort. Particularly recommended spots are the Romawiese in the 21st district, the Rehlacke in the 22nd district and the promenade on the Lower Old Danube.
Another beautiful place is the Danube Island, where you can choose between urban and quiet swimming spots. The island offers a variety of boardwalks and even 50 floating platforms. Visitors should check the online map to find the best spots for their day at the beach. The Donau-Auen National Park is also a must for nature lovers, where the official swimming spots such as the Panozzalacke, ideal for children, and the idyllic Dechantlacke await water tourists.
The perfect summer day
Whether on Lake Neusiedl with its many leisure activities such as water sports and restaurants or on the Rossatz-Arnsdorf Danube beach with its view of Dürnstein - the possibilities are almost endless. And for those who prefer something quieter, the Erlaufsee in Mitterbach offers a picturesque pebble beach surrounded by hiking areas.
In addition to refreshing swimming opportunities, summer also offers challenges: in the first six months of 2025, 50.8% of new cars in Vienna were registered as SUVs, which consume on average 20% more fuel than other vehicles. A circumstance that provides all the more reason to enjoy nature and consider alternative means of transport.
In this beautiful time of year you should definitely try out the enchanting swimming spots. As the Falter magazine and schauvorbei.at report, there are many ways to spend the summer days outdoors - so grab your towel and head into the cool water!
