Criticism of the staff shortage: Seniors serve themselves in Wieden!
In a Viennese café known for its unique concept, the voices of criticism are increasing. A former employee has spoken out and expressed serious concerns about working conditions in full retirement. The waitress, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes her experiences and speaks of a staff shortage that makes the situation more difficult for everyone involved. She describes the circumstances as "not normal" for the restaurant industry, as even the older patrons who work in the cafe are forced to take and clear orders while regular employees are absent. This situation not only leads to a high workload, but also causes frustration among those present.
“Despite the many guests who come every day, there is no money available for additional staff,” criticizes the former waitress. She points out that marketing employs far more people, while service suffers. MyDistrict reports that Moriz Piffl, co-founder of Vollpension, has addressed these complaints and vehemently defends the project. Piffl emphasizes that there is no financial support for the café and that the business has to stand on its own two feet in order to stay in the black.
The role of seniors in the café
A special feature of full board is the integration of seniors into the business. Two older people work in the café every day, baking cakes and making contact with the guests. However, the speed that is expected of regular employees is often lacking. Piffl emphasizes that this concept not only serves to keep the café running, but is also intended to combat old-age poverty and loneliness. Many of the seniors who work in the café find their work valuable and actively contribute to the community.
The conflict between the need to operate cost-effectively and the desire to create a welcoming and compassionate environment for all generations highlights the predicament of the glitzy café. It remains to be seen how the full board will deal with the internal challenges and what measures will be taken to improve working conditions and avoid future complaints.
