Copenhagen overtaken: Vienna loses title of most livable city!

Vienna has lost one of its proud titles and is no longer the most livable city in the world. Copenhagen has risen to the top with an impressive score of 98 points Global Liveability Index catapulted, while Vienna now shares second place with 97.1 points, level with Zurich.

The assessment, which includes categories such as healthcare, culture, environment, education, infrastructure and stability, shows that Vienna had to accept significant deductions in the stability category. The score fell to 95 after two foiled terrorist attacks in the city last year impacted the security situation. A planned attack on a Taylor Swift concert is seen as particularly worrying. These circumstances have meant that the perception of Vienna as a safe place to live has suffered, which the Interior Ministry also emphasizes: The risk of an attack is “currently high in the abstract, but not acutely threatening,” which put the city under pressure in the security assessment.

Copenhagen on the rise

Copenhagen not only shines with an excellent overall result, but has even achieved the top score of 100 points in the areas of stability, education and infrastructure. The Danish capital has been praised for its investment in security measures, including an increased police presence and surveillance cameras, which are seen as a model for other European cities. These are all factors that help Copenhagen to be at the forefront of international comparison, while Vienna feels the consequences of the terrorist threat BR.de reported.

Although some Viennese are not too sad about the “downgrade” as they find increasing numbers of tourists and Airbnb apartments problematic, the question remains how Vienna will respond to these challenges in the future. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) put the loss of the top position into perspective and declared that there was “no shame” in sharing the top places with other cities. He is convinced that Vienna remains an attractive city. The time also notes that Vienna has topped the list for three years and is now in a very competitive environment with cities such as Melbourne, Geneva, Sydney, Osaka, Auckland, Adelaide and Vancouver.

The top 10 most livable cities

The ranking of the most livable cities shows an exciting mix of different nations and cultures. Here are the current top 10:

Place City Points
1 Copenhagen 98
2 Vienna 97.1
2 Zurich 97.1
3 Melbourne 97
4 Geneva 96.8
5 Sydney 96.6
6 Osaka 96.0
6 Auckland 96.0
8 Adelaide 95.9
9 Vancouver 95.8

On the other side of the ranking are cities like Tripoli and Damascus, which are way behind with 40.1 and 30.7 points and reflect the challenges of life in highly endangered regions.

A total of 173 cities were assessed, with only three of them having more than six million inhabitants. Even the most populous Tokyo only achieved 13th place, showing how important aspects such as quality of life and safety are for people.
