Together against cancer: Run for research in Vienna on October 4th!
On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the 19th run for cancer research will take place at the Altes AKH university campus in Vienna. Under the motto “Together we go further”, it will once again offer a great opportunity to get involved in an important cause. The run takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and all participants are invited to complete the new 1.6 kilometer loop as they wish. Registration is online at www.krebsforschungslauf.at possible, and spontaneous registrations can also be made directly on site.
The goal this year is to reach 30,000 rounds, which will result in an additional 17,500 euros being distributed by corporate partners. A mischievous project that is all about solidarity. 100% of the proceeds from the run flow into innovative research projects at MedUni Vienna that focus on combating cancer. Since this charity event began in 2007, over 60 research projects have been supported, receiving more than €2 million in funding - a sum that makes a real difference in cancer research.
Growing numbers and increasing survival rates
The figures for cancer in Austria are alarming. There are over 45,000 new cases every year, with men being affected more often than women. According to Statistics Austria, cancer is responsible for around 20% of all annual deaths. But there are bright spots: cancer mortality is falling, and the five-year survival rate has increased from 55.8% in 1995-1999 to 63% between 2015 and 2019. This shows that research is on the right track and progress is being made.
The MedUni Vienna is currently committed to even more projects. In addition to the development of personalized therapies, we are also continually working to find new, targeted approaches to combat cancer. This is particularly important because tumor diseases are the second most common cause of death in Austria and the most common cancers are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.
A community event for everyone
In addition to the sporting challenge, the run is a platform to raise awareness of cancer. Participants can not only become active in a community with like-minded people, but also activate their social networks by networking on social media using the hashtag #cancerresearchrun.
If you want to challenge yourself athletically, you can also get a functional running shirt in the trendy color mauve for 25 euros. The event is supported by numerous partners, including prominent sponsors such as Amgen, Eli Lilly, Novartis and Pfizer, who see cancer research as an important cause and are committed to promoting it.
This is an opportunity to not only make a personal contribution, but also to be part of a large community that works together for cancer research. Like us MedUni Vienna reports, the proceeds from this run support numerous innovative research projects. Get involved and make a statement – every step counts!
