Brutal attack in Vienna: Salesman attacked while handing over brakes!

There will be an attack using brutal methods in Vienna on Saturday, September 14, 2025. A 27-year-old salesman in Brigittenau fell victim to two unknown perpetrators when he agreed to sell car brake systems via the “Willhaben” online platform. The incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m Rebhanngasse in the 20th district of Vienna.

During the handover, which took place in a public parking lot, the seller was choked and beaten by the two men. Despite minor injuries sustained, the main focus remained on the stolen loot: the braking system. The two perpetrators fled in an unmarked car and an immediate search has so far been unsuccessful. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office, Center-East branch, has taken over the investigation.

Frequency of crime in Vienna

The dark side of online trading is also reflected in current surveys that shed light on the security situation in Austria. According to one Security study 2025, which was published by the trade association in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and Crime Prevention, 86% of Austrian retailers have experienced crime in their business. The annual damage caused by shoplifting is particularly alarming, which amounts to over 500 million euros in Austria. Cybercrime has also increased significantly in recent years, which poses major challenges, particularly for retailers who offer their goods online.

Of the retailers surveyed, 64% reported cybercrime and order fraud, while 42% were affected by criminal offenses on multiple occasions. This shows that both buyers and sellers need to be vigilant when trading online to avoid falling into the clutches of fraudsters themselves.

The dangers of the digital market

More and more people are using platforms like “Willhaben” and the like to sell old things or get bargains. But the incident of the attack on the 27-year-old makes it clear that there are also major risks. In the same breath, reference is made to the “Together Safe” initiative, which is intended to support retailers in improving their security and taking preventive measures.

Going forward, it will be important for consumers and retailers alike to be aware of safety precautions and potential dangers. The optimal payment methods to avoid fraud, such as credit cards and PayPal, are very popular. A feeling of security when shopping online is the goal that is sought not only by buyers, but also by retailers.

The incident in Rebhanngasse shows once again that crime has become part of everyday life - whether online or offline. The public is urged to remain vigilant when transacting online to avoid similar attacks. The case continues to be handled by the police pursued while the 27-year-old has to recover from his minor injuries.
