A23: Traffic collapse threatens! Sterngasse exit closed until Monday!
The construction site on the Südost Tangente (A23) in Vienna will cause additional traffic restrictions from Friday, June 6th. The Sterngasse exit in the southbound direction will be closed from 10:00 p.m. until Monday, June 9th at 3:00 p.m. Road users will be redirected via the Altmannsdorfer branch, reports ÖAMTC.
The A23 is one of the busiest roads in Austria, with around 230,000 vehicles passing through the Prater Hochstraße area every day. Extensive renovation work is currently underway in both directions. The main construction work is underway, particularly towards the north, while the hard shoulder is being used as a temporary lane. This measure is intended to help create an additional trough track. Daily delays of up to an hour are expected at the same times as weekend traffic peaks.
Detours and traffic management systems
The bypass ramp towards Handelskai at the Prater junction will also be closed during construction work, but the exit towards the center will remain open. A color coding system is used to direct traffic and is intended to help drivers keep an overview. In order to avoid additional chaos, it is not advisable to avoid the stadium avenue, as obstructions must also be expected there.
The construction site will be completed in several phases: After the first phase in the north direction, which is currently underway, the construction site in the south direction will follow on June 23rd in the same sequence. After a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, the renovation of the Prater and Handelskai junctions is planned. The aim of the entire measure is to complete the work by the end of August 2026.

The renovation work is not just limited to the A23 in Vienna. The A23 motorway in Hamburg is also under reconstruction. Maintenance measures are planned between the Pinneberg-Nord and Halstenbek/Rellingen junctions from March to the end of July 2025. The traffic areas are partially closed and diverted in several phases. This was necessary because the A23 had previously received a comprehensive renovation in 2009.
