A23: Traffic collapse threatens! Exit Sterngasse closed until Monday!

The construction site on Southeast Tangente (A23) in Vienna will provide additional traffic restrictions from Friday, June 6th. The Sterngasse exit in the direction of travel will be closed from 10:00 p.m. to Monday, June 9, at 3:00 p.m. The road users are diverted via the Altmannsdorfer AST, reports ÖAMTC .

The A23 is one of the most busy roads in Austria, with around 230,000 vehicles every day in the area of Prater Hochstraße. Comprehensive renovation work is currently underway in both directions. The main construction measures are particularly in progress in the north, while the breakdown strip is temporarily used as a lane. This measure is intended to help create an additional trough track. Daily delays of up to an hour can be expected at the same times as the traffic peaks of the weekend.

The bypass ramp towards Handelskai at the Prater knot is also blocked during the construction work, but the departure towards the center remains open. In order to lead the traffic, a coloring system is used to help the handlebar: inside to keep an overview. In order to avoid chaos, dodging via the Stadionallee is not advisable, since disabilities must also be expected there.

The construction site is processed in several phases: After the first phase in the direction of travel, which is currently running, the construction site in the south of the route will follow on June 23. After a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, the renovations of the junctions knot Prater and Handelskai are on the plan. The aim of the entire measure is to complete the work by the end of August 2026.

The renovation work is not only limited to the A23 in Vienna. The A23 motorway in Hamburg is also in conversion. Conservation measures between the Pinneberg-Nord and Halstenbek/Rellingen junctions are planned there from March to the end of July 2025. Here, the traffic areas are blocked and derived in several phases. This was necessary because the A23 had previously received a comprehensive renovation in 2009.

With these extensive projects, the traffic authorities try to minimize the stress on the streets and at the same time ensure a smooth flow of traffic. More information about these measures is on Autobahn.de to be found.
