Vienna is blooming: 690,000 flower bulbs planted for spring!
The start of autumn in Vienna – that doesn’t just mean leisurely walks through the brightly colored parks, but also a lot of work for the gardeners of the Vienna City Gardens. These are preparing for the cold season and are already laying the foundation for a colorful spring season. In the coming weeks, over 690,000 flower bulbs, mainly tulips, will be planted in more than 470 beds. 100,000 bulbs alone are destined for a new wild crocus meadow in Türkenschanzpark.
To ensure that the freshly planted onions survive the winter well, they are covered with around 70 tons of brushwood. This not only protects the bulbs, but also ensures a varied living environment. To raise public awareness, signs are being put up warning: “Be careful – there are flower bulbs sleeping here”.
Maintenance of urban areas
However, the tasks of city gardens are not limited to planting. The foliage of over 500,000 city trees, including around 100,000 street trees, also needs to be cared for. A large part of the collected leaves is processed in the composting plant in Lobau and contributes to improving the soil quality in the parks. When incorporated into bush areas, it creates a natural habitat that is particularly beneficial for small animals such as hedgehogs. Garden owners are asked not to remove all leaves - a small contribution to promoting biodiversity!
This maintenance of urban green spaces is not only sensible, but crucial for the sustainable development of Vienna. Urban gardens make an important contribution to environmental quality and improve the urban microclimate. As explained on klima-wissen.de, effective care and minimizing chemicals are essential aspects of environmentally friendly garden care.
The role of urban gardens
City gardens not only provide habitat for plants and animals, but they are also places of education and promote civic participation. Innovative technologies and ecological practices, such as the use of biological crop protection methods and organic fertilizers, are very popular. They help to make city gardens more attractive and liveable.
However, the challenge remains: in an increasingly urbanized environment with limited space, creative solutions such as vertical gardening and roof gardens should be considered. These offer a promising approach to utilizing limited space in the city while improving the cityscape.
So when you hear the rustling of leaves on your next autumn walk through Vienna's parks, remember: it's about much more than just aesthetics. We are actively working towards a vibrant, green future that benefits both nature and people. Now is the time for all garden lovers to get active - the organic waste bin for garden waste is ready and a 48-sized leaf bag is available for 1 euro at the waste disposal site. A small contribution to a big cause!
