Währing Jewish Cemetery: Renovation in full swing after 200 years!
Passion and commitment characterize the renovation of the Jewish cemetery in Währing, whose total area of around 6,000 square meters is now almost complete. The extraordinary restoration of the tombs, carried out mainly in the first sector to the left of the main avenue, provides a fresh shine and is a significant step towards the preservation of this historic site. Jennifer Kickert, member of the Vienna Green Party, recently presented the results of the renovation measures. Among those present were Günther Havranek, chairman of the “Association to Save the Jewish Cemetery in Währing”, and ÖBB boss Andreas Matthä, which underlines the value of this initiative.
The extensive renovation includes many detailed steps: fallen gravestones are raised, broken parts are put together and the graves are cleared of unwanted plants. Professional stonemasons are required to carefully assemble, clean, glue and finally impregnate the fragments. The effort involved is considerable, but the results are impressive - the gravestones shine in new splendor as if they had just been placed.
Support from ÖBB and the City of Vienna
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the railway, the ÖBB has pledged its support for the renovation of the cemetery. Matthä explained that the graves of deceased railway workers in particular will be renovated, which will further enhance the project. The City of Vienna is also actively involved in the project and ensures that financing for the preservation and care of the cemetery is secured.
The Republic will provide a total of 800,000 euros for maintenance by 2028. Around 200,000 euros are spent annually to renovate around 200 to 250 gravestones. The total costs for the comprehensive renovation of the cemetery are estimated at 15 million euros. A large part of the financing comes from the cemetery fund of the Republic of Austria, which further illustrates the relevance of this project.
Commitment of volunteers
One of the most beautiful facets of the renovation is the role of the volunteers, who are actively committed to restoring the gravesites. Their commitment shows how important preserving this heritage is for the community. We are working together to make the Jewish cemetery in Währing a place of remembrance and appreciation that will be preserved for future generations.
The renovation not only contributes to preserving history, but also brings together people who are committed to Vienna's cultural wealth. The progress at the Jewish cemetery is a sign that a lot can be achieved with great commitment and a strong community.
