U6 drivers in chaos: construction work causes traffic chaos during the autumn holidays!

From October 27, 2025, the U6 in Vienna will only operate in two parts. The reason for the restriction is urgent construction work, which will last until November 3, 2025. During this time, passengers must expect extensive replacement services to maintain mobility. The renewal of the switches between the Spittelau and Jägerstraße stations is the reason for the changes to the timetable, which will come into force from 4:00 a.m.

During the construction work, the U6 will divide operations into two sections: One part will run between Siebenhirten and Spittelau, the other between Jägerstraße and Floridsdorf. It is particularly important to know that in the southern areas every second U6 only runs between Siebenhirten and Michelbeuern - AKH. This also involves an adjustment to line 12, which will run more frequently between Josefstädter Straße and Dresdner Straße, even at night on weekends.

Replacement traffic and line adjustments

In order to compensate for the restrictions, replacement traffic was set up. Bus line 37A will support traffic between Spittelau and Dresdner Straße and thus accommodate passengers on this section of the route. In addition, trams 9 and 49 are also affected by the construction work. Tram line 9 only runs between Gersthof and Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz and partially serves the route of the 2er Bim to Josefstädter Straße. A replacement bus, the 9E, will cover the discontinued stations. Line 49 only runs between Breitensee and Hütteldorf, with the 49E replacement bus also being used. Support was provided for tram 52 from the Ring to Westbahnhof and on to Baumgarten.

These construction sites are part of a broader strategy to improve the public transport network in Vienna. According to Wiener Linien, the efficient public transport system is not only regularly maintained, but also modernized and expanded. Such major construction projects are necessary to achieve long-term improvements for passengers, even if they may entail short-term restrictions. The latest information on the construction projects can be found on Wiener Linien.

So if you are preparing for the next few days of commuting, you should find out about the changed timetables in good time. The good news: Despite the restrictions, these measures will strengthen the public transport network in the long term, which ultimately also benefits passengers. In this regard, a certain degree of flexibility is required.
