Fall prevention for seniors: Safe everyday life in Vienna through workshops!

There is an urgent topic in the air in Vienna: fall prevention for seniors. Falls should not be underestimated - they represent a higher risk of accidents than traffic accidents and often happen in your own home. To counteract this, Ursula Hübel, the health officer, has launched a remarkable project called “Safely Healthy in Vienna”. This is supported by the Vienna Health Promotion (WiG) and the Vienna State Health Promotion Fund, such as courier reported.

Interactive workshops have been taking place in this context since October 2023 under the motto “Human stumbling block”. In groups of around 20 participants, the seniors learn how they can move around within their own four walls without risk. The program is practical: In addition to balance and strength exercises, aids such as anti-slip mats are also used. And the best thing: next year the lectures will even be doubled!

A holistic approach

One aspect that makes the project special is the integration of the dementia issue. It explains that limitations in the senses, memory and mobility can increase the risk of falls in old age. In order to specifically counteract this, a specialist conference on the topic of fall prevention is planned for March 2026 in the town hall. Representatives from the areas of health, urban planning and transport will present their perspectives and information stands will be available during breaks to offer further support.

However, the commitment goes far beyond the workshops. The introduction of digital formats is planned for 2024, including a QR trainer with fitness and fall prevention exercises. The first test phase of the trainer will take place in the Hanson settlement east and in the “Häuser zum Leben”. The initiative will continue until the end of 2026, with subsequent offerings already being planned.

Additional resources

There are numerous supporting programs for anyone who would like to additionally work on their mobility. For example, the Rummelsberger Diakonie has launched the free strength and balance training “ProfiL80+”. This program is suitable not only for seniors with memory impairments, but also for anyone who wants to maintain their everyday skills. The video series covers topics such as nutrition in old age, fine motor skills and makes it possible to carry out the exercises together with relatives. On Dementia guide Anyone interested can find all the information about it.

Health, mobility and physical well-being are crucial for the quality of life in old age. A brochure from the Federal Center for Health Education therefore offers an overview of fall prevention and explains how to improve stability and gait security. There are also special recommendations for people with restricted mobility to promote independence.

A good hand for your own health is therefore required. Take advantage of the offers and workshops that you shouldn't just miss! Vienna is trying hard to make the lives of the older generation safer and more self-determined.
