Construction site chaos in Vienna: From September the Bim will roll normally again!

Wiener Linien looks back on a busy summer and announces that the extensive construction work on public transport will be completed on time on September 1st. Wiener Linien reports on the numerous modernization measures on its website wienerlinien.at. The summer months were used to optimize the rail network and convince passengers with better service.

Tram line 18 is particularly affected by the work as it will only be operated for a short time due to the modernization measures. Line 43 also only runs to Elterleinplatz until September 1st. From this date onwards, however, everything will be back to normal - line 43 will then run as usual. Line 9 was also affected, as diversions were set up on Jörgerstrasse to enable construction work.

Construction progress and track renewals

A welcome update for all passengers: around 1,000 meters of new tracks were installed between the U6 station Alser Straße and Elterleinplatz. The work in central areas such as the Universitätsring, the Kärntner Ring and the Schubertring was also successfully completed. With these advances, lines 1 and 2 have been running regularly again since mid-August.

From September 1st, the U4 will be available to passengers again without interruption after the tunnel girders have been replaced. However, a longer construction phase means that the track renewal of line 18 in the 3rd district will last until the end of the year. For passengers, line 18 will run again from Burggasse to St. Marx from Monday.

A look ahead to 2025

The footsteps of this year's construction activity will already be felt next year, as the track renewal offensive in Vienna will begin in February 2025. A total of around 11 kilometers of tracks will be replaced, which will shorten travel times and increase punctuality. The Johnstraße and Breitensee stops will also be improved as part of the work, which will contribute to an optimized travel experience. Here, passengers can also use alternative means of transport, such as the U3, while work is being carried out on Hütteldorfer Straße.

Changes in the operation of some lines, such as the 25, 26 and 31, should also be noted. These lines have an earlier closing time until the end of June, which could pose challenges for both passengers and residents. A shuttle service for people with limited mobility will also be set up to ensure barrier-free access during the construction phase.

With this comprehensive modernization work, Wiener Linien is sending a clear signal for the further expansion of the infrastructure and the improvement of the public transport offering. Further details about the specific diversions and changes can be found on the Wiener Linien website meinkreis.at to view. Stay tuned for future developments in Vienna's transport network!
