Chase in Vienna: drug rush behind the handlebars of a bicycle!
On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, shortly after three in the morning, there was a wild chase on Hütteldorfer Straße in Vienna's 15th district, which ended with police intervention. A 36-year-old Austrian man was stopped by officers because he was using his bicycle on the sidewalk. Instead of obeying the police's request, the cyclist fled and repeatedly ignored the stop signs. The pursuit spanned several streets and ended with a violent arrest.
When he was arrested, the cyclist was extremely aggressive and attacked the police officers with punches and kicks. Unfortunately, one police officer did not escape unscathed and had to be treated in hospital for his injuries. A certain level of ambition among cyclists may not least be due to the influence of drugs; Small amounts of cannabis were seized during the arrest and officers determined he was under the influence of drugs.
Pepper spray against drug-freedom
In another incident, also in Vienna, a similarly stressful situation occurred with a 32-year-old cyclist. He ignored a red light and ignored police officers' requests to stop him. He also tried to ram an officer, which could only be avoided by a daring jump to the side. Finally he was stopped on Lassallestrasse, where he refused to identify himself and tried to escape again. The police then used pepper spray to defuse the situation. The cyclist was temporarily arrested and taken to the station for examination, where he was found to be fatigued and unfit to drive.
The legal consequences that can arise from such incidents should not be underestimated. Anyone driving under the influence of illegal drugs is committing an administrative offense and must expect fines of up to 1,500 euros and possible driving bans. For further offenses, such as endangering other road users or accidents, the punishment can even lead to a prison sentence. The police are able to quickly detect drug use, which can have unpleasant financial consequences for many of those affected, easily exceeding 2,000 euros.
Combating drugs on the roads remains an important task for the police, particularly given the danger posed by such behaviour. The case on Hütteldorfer Strasse shows once again how quickly a simple check can end in a dangerous situation.
