Sad farewell: Polish farmer's hut at Meiselmarkt closes after 20 years

Unmistakable changes at the Meiselmarkt: After more than 20 years, Anna Gutkowska-Wasilewski's popular “Polonia” farmer's hut is closing. The 71-year-old landlady is retiring from active service and citing personal reasons for the closure. These include her husband's serious illness and caring for her three beloved dogs. Despite her eleven-year retirement, Anna remained a fixture in the restaurant and was always passionate about what she did.

The decision to close was not easy. Anna noticed that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find reliable staff, which ultimately led to the restaurant closing. But the tradition won't stop completely: two brothers who already run a stand at the Meiselmarkt have taken over and are planning to enrich the culinary landscape with Kurdish cuisine. “I am satisfied that the restaurant is in good hands,” said Anna about the new operators, who want to work with just as much love and dedication.

A solemn farewell

To properly celebrate the farewell, a party was organized that was very popular. Friends, regulars and companions gathered to honor Anna for her decades of dedication to the restaurant industry. The atmosphere was relaxed with wine, beef tartare and singing. Leo Lugner, a well-known face of the FPÖ, honored Anna on this occasion for her 20 years of work and her unmistakable voice, which will remain in the memory of many.

What does the future bring? Anna lets it be known that she might want to serve Polish mulled wine at the Christmas market in Lugner City - a wonderful way to continue to honor her roots and delight the locals with her specialties.

sporting events on the same weekend

While an era is coming to an end at Meiselmarkt, everything in the sports world is still going strong. There will be a football game between Illinois and Rutgers on Saturday, November 1st. It will be broadcast live on NBC at 11:00 a.m. CT. The Illini's basketball season is also starting soon and there are numerous games on the schedule.

And while we look forward to the new flavors at Meiselmarkt, the passion for sport and community remains unbroken. Whether gastronomy or sport, Vienna has something to offer for everyone. Stay curious and discover the next few weeks!
