The art of mourning in Vienna: Griefyards brings back memories
A slightly different art project has taken root in Vienna: “Griefyards” invites all citizens to express their grief in the form of letters. The letters addressed to deceased companions could be posted in special mailboxes in the city until October 30th. The initiator Celine Vanhoutte is keen to make the themes of connection, grief and love visible. “It’s about creating a space for feelings,” says Vanhoutte. This creative and sensitive initiative will be exhibited in the form of ten selected letters as works of art at Atelier Antonieta, Friesgasse 11, 1150 Vienna, until November 2nd.
Special attention is paid not only to the presentation of the letters, but also to supporting children with cancer. Part of the proceeds from the project go to “Rainbows Austria”, an organization that supports children who have lost a parent or are experiencing grief due to separation. Selling these works of art is not only a way to process grief, but also an opportunity to help others. “We are hoping for a broad response from other federal states and abroad in order to possibly expand the project in the coming year,” says Vanhoutte.
Creative opportunities for children and families
Another aspect that enriches the project are new options that will be developed for next year. The focus here is on networking with the affected children from “Rainbows Austria”. A digital mailbox will also remain open until next year to provide an opportunity to send letters and continue the conversation about grief even after the deadline. Crowdfunding activities will run in parallel until Friday, November 7th to continue supporting the project.
The concept is not only creative but also educational for families. For example, parents can create deeper access to the topic of grief for their children through various activities based on emotional education. Platforms like Pinterest offer numerous ideas for combining fun and learning, be it through craft activities or creative writing impulses.
Don't forget health aspects
In addition to the emotional themes that “Griefyards” addresses, it is also important to consider health aspects when dealing with grief. Grief, like many emotions, can also cause physical reactions. Chronic illnesses, such as asthma, can occur more frequently in emotionally stressful phases. If symptoms suddenly worsen, such as shortness of breath or cough, it is crucial to follow an asthma action plan. This can ensure timely medical care and help prevent complications.
The approach of “Griefyards” is both an invitation to reflect on your own loss and an impetus to actively deal with your feelings and seek support. It is a step in the right direction to not only accept grief, but also actively process it and share it with others.
