Teenager caught red-handed in burglary in Vienna-Rudolfsheim!
Last night two teenagers were caught red-handed in Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus when they tried to break into a surplus store. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old Syrian citizen kicked the shop's glass front door around 1:45 a.m. when the shop owner happened to drive by and spotted the teenagers. He courageously dialed the police emergency number and informed the officers, who were able to quickly launch an immediate search. As Heute reports, the suspects were arrested by the Leyserstrasse police station. In addition, investigations are underway into other, as yet unknown, participants in the crime.
This event stands in stark contrast to the alarming trends in youth crime that are currently shaping Vienna. There has been a dramatic increase in this young age group in recent years. According to Kosmo, almost 15,000 underage suspects have been recorded, which puts the city in a worrying situation. For the year as a whole, 194,981 crimes were recorded, including violent assaults and property crimes, an increase of 4.6% compared to the previous year. In particular, the number of suspected people has reached a high of 98,996.
Youth crime in focus
The observed increase in violent and robbery crimes is particularly frightening. Compared to the previous year, robbery crimes increased by 18.1% and violent crimes increased by 5.2%. It is reported that 57.1% of suspects are of foreign origin, which is higher than the average for other federal states. Within this group there are 5,066 suspects under the age of 14 who cannot be held criminally responsible. Despite a decline in break-ins into residential buildings and apartments, Vienna is recording a dramatic increase in vehicle break-ins - from 2,182 in 2023 to 4,909 now.
Another example of increasing juvenile crime in this district occurred several years ago. In September 2011, a 25-year-old man was attacked by three unknown teenagers in Vogelweidpark. They grabbed him and tore his wallet out of his trouser pocket before fleeing towards the town hall. The reporting from Vienna documents the negative course of the police search that was initiated immediately, but was unsuccessful. The victim suffered a bruised wrist and a fractured forearm.
Reactions and possible measures
The situation is a cause for concern and the Interior Ministry plans to present crime statistics soon. It is to be expected that the city government will respond to these developments, possibly by tightening youth welfare law. A NEOS proposal to introduce compulsory stays in homes for violent minors is at least not fundamentally rejected by City Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ).
The rising level of juvenile crime is creating a lot of unease in the city. Given the situation, both citizens and authorities are required to work together to develop protective and preventive measures. It remains to be seen what strategies the city government will use to counteract this worrying development.
