S-Bahn closure in Vienna: replacement buses ensure connections until September!
From June 28th there will be a major change in S-Bahn traffic in Vienna. There are no trains running between Floridsdorf and Praterstern until September 1st. This was done by the MyDistrict announced and falls into the renovation work of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), which is taking place during the summer holidays. The aim of these measures is to modernize the S-Bahn route and eliminate previous deficiencies.
However, two alternative bus routes are available for commuters and travelers. The yellow line, a “direct bus”, will run between Praterstern and Floridsdorf between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. without stopping, while the blue line, which represents the classic rail replacement service, will stop at Traisengasse and Handelskai. This information is also available in real time in the ÖBB Scotty and the Wien Mobil app, making it easier for passengers to plan their trips. Valid ÖBB tickets are recognized by Wiener Linien on the defined replacement routes, such as öbb.at reported.
Orientation aids for passengers
To make the changeover as smooth as possible, large, colored floor and wall markings will be installed at the stops. Passengers can easily orientate themselves here and to avoid confusion, there are two separate stops for the yellow and blue bus lines. There are also information posters and customer guides on site to help with questions and find connections.
During the construction work, the U4 route will also be renewed by Wiener Linien, which will also take place from June 28th to August 31st. It is recommended to use the various metro and tram services that remain in service. The U1, U2, U3 and U4 as well as numerous tram lines are available for detours. Particular mention should be made of the tram lines D and E4, which are used as an alternative between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring.
Further construction projects and traffic restrictions
However, the construction work in Vienna does not only affect the S-Bahn. An extensive track construction project will also be carried out on Hütteldorfer Straße from April to June, which includes the replacement of 1,750 meters of track. This means restrictions on scheduled operations during this time. For people with mobility disabilities, a shuttle service is offered between Hütteldorfer Straße U and Lützowgasse.
Overall, the coming months will be characterized by extensive modernization work on the track systems in Vienna. The city plans to sustainably improve its infrastructure and asks passengers for their understanding and patience during this time. Further information about upcoming construction work can best be found at wienerlinien.at be read.
