Wiener Klimmodell: Citizens actively shape their green future!
Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Österreich - The climate protection is very important in Vienna: the vídeňkýskýk Klimatickým enables the citizens, active in Solutions to improve their living environment. The innovative project has already reached its fourth cycle and for the first time also includes additional districts in the initiative.
The city of Vienna raises suggestions and works closely with experts to implement them. The focus is on four central subject areas: ecological mobility, sustainable life, the use of renewable energies and climate -friendly public spaces. Every year in autumn, citizens can bring in their ideas, with around 4,000 proposals have been received in the past three years.
successful implementation and participation
Of the ideas submitted, 282 have already been selected for further elaboration, with 53 suggestions recommended for implementation. In nine districts, including Margareten, Mariahilf and Alsergrund, the project is already being successfully implemented. The districts of Josefstadt and Penzing, who enthusiastically participate, have been added this year.
"We are of great importance to reaching those people who have less time or funds," explains the responsible city councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky. In addition, the clarification of possible climate protection measures that the citizens can take.
Currently, the final projects for the districts of Alsergrund, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus are selected, the results of the current cycle will be presented before the end of June.
climate protection needs community commitment
The initiative in Vienna shows how important cities can occur as actors in climate protection. A look across the borders shows that Berlin is also considered a pioneer in climate protection. According to berlin.de , the carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by about a third from 1990 to 2016. Nevertheless, it is clear that the previous efforts are not sufficient to meet global warming.
cities are responsible for around 70 percent of global CO2 emissions. Determined action is therefore of central importance to overcome the challenges of climate change. This shows that a stronger inclusion of the population, as is implemented in Vienna, is of the greatest importance not only locally, but also at international level.
The Viennese initiative is a step in the right direction and heralds a new era of interaction between the city administration and the citizens. Only hope that the commitment will find many imitators!
