Rapid Vienna is crowned Liliencup champion with a 6-1 win!

Wiesbaden experienced a captivating football weekend at the internationally renowned U17 Liliencup, where Rapid Vienna took home the challenge cup. The Viennese showed their dominance in the final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and won 6-1. Danko Filipovic was particularly outstanding, contributing two goals to the win and thus making a significant contribution to his team's success. Philip Hedl was named best tournament keeper for his strong performances in goal, which underlines his major contribution to Rapidler's triumph.

The enthusiasm in the sold-out hall at the German Unity Square was palpable; over 3,000 visitors cheered on the teams and turned the event into a real football festival. The organizers Jörg Wintermeyer and Norbert Roth ensured that things ran smoothly with over 160 helpers, which coach Kevin Müller from the Liliencup also emphasized positively. Former world champion Pierre Littbarski was also there and praised the high quality of the semi-finals, while fulfilling requests for autographs and giving tips to young footballers at the football school.

The tableau of the tournament

In addition to the grand finale, the field of participants was also impressive. Mainz 05 secured third place with a narrow 6:4 win over FC Heidenheim. The latter were able to put in a strong performance despite the defeat, with Marc Schnatterer, who coaches the U17s, assuring that the youth sector continues to play an important role in the club and that there is continuity. In the interview, Roger Prinzen, the new NLZ boss, emphasized that there was a sense of “ubiquitous continuity” at all levels.

Hopes for the future

The U15 juniors of SV Wehen Wiesbaden missed out on advancing, but coach Marcel Poruba recognized positive approaches in his team. A shining moment for the club was the invitation of talents like Dominik Hohmann to the DFB course, which shows that the club's youth work is bearing fruit.

With a view to the coming years, the Heidenheimers have already been invited to the next edition of the Liliencup in 2027. Wintermeyer and Roth plan to include other teams, with the field remaining largely the same, although no feedback has been received from English teams for the 2026 edition.

Overall, the tournament not only reflects the passion for football, but also the growing talent in our region who want to prove themselves at a high level in the U-national team. The competition for the European Championship title in youth football remains exciting, and the developments in the DFB team show that we also have a lot of potential in Austria.

The games were characterized by high intensity and the unshakable hope for a successful future in the youth sector, which is reflected in the diverse performances of the teams. Football is and remains a central part of our culture, and events like the U17 Lily Cup are the best proof of this.
