Climate protection in Vienna: 900 ideas from Josefstadt and Penzing inspire!

The city of Vienna relies on the creative ideas of its citizens to advance climate protection. As part of the Vienna climate team, almost 900 innovative suggestions for climate protection measures were collected in the Josefstadt and Penzing districts. These ideas range from generating energy through movement to open exchange cupboards to more greenery and safe cycle streets. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes the importance of citizen participation and is pleased about the great commitment that was shown.

During the idea phase, numerous events took place with local organizations and clubs to encourage the population to participate. In Josefstadt in particular, an impressive 220 proposals were submitted. District head Martin Fabisch and district head Michaela Schüchner expressed their enthusiasm about the lively participation. “The commitment of the citizens shows that the issue of climate protection has arrived in our city,” said Fabisch.

The path to concrete projects

With new freshness, the Vienna climate team will start a new round of idea generation in autumn 2025, which lasted from September 10th to October 10th, 2025. A few months later, the submitted proposals will now be examined. Phase 2 of the project begins in November, in which all ideas are subjected to a technical assessment in order to prepare them for implementation. Public idea exhibitions and workshops are planned in both districts from mid-November.

The idea exhibitions in Josefstadt are scheduled to take place from November 11th to 13th, 2025, while the exhibition in Penzing is scheduled for November 18th to 20th, 2025. At the same time, there will be workshops in Josefstadt on November 12th and in Penzing on November 19th in which citizens can actively participate in the further development of their ideas.

From ideas to concrete changes

The best ideas will finally be developed into concrete project designs in spring 2026. A representative citizen jury will decide which proposals will be implemented within three years. The citizen participation system ensures that the projects not only look good on paper, but actually sustainably improve the quality of life in the districts.

Participation remains open to everyone who would like to become part of the process - regardless of whether they live or work in Vienna. Anyone who wants to contribute their ideas can get involved in the following areas:

In the implementation of the climate team so far, which has been tested as a pilot project in three districts since 2022, over 4,000 ideas have already been collected, 75 of which have been further developed into feasible projects.

Overall, the city of Vienna's goal with this initiative is to work together with its citizens to create a better climate for everyone.
