Vienna: Public transport is returning – restrictions until December!

In Vienna, movement will return to the public transport network from November 3, 2025. After an intensive phase of renovation and modernization work during the autumn holidays, numerous lines are now accessible. In recent days, Wiener Linien has been working on various lines to restore normal operations, such as oe24 reported.

Particular attention is paid to tram line 49, which runs between the Ring, Volkstheater and Baumgarten. Due to track work in Hütteldorf, this line will be restricted until November 7th. Passengers must expect detours until the system is fully restored.

Restrictions and diversions

For train commuters, the halfway route to the Landstrasse U4 station could be a challenge, as the opposite side of the platform in the direction of Hütteldorf will not be served until December 4th. Travelers must drive to Schwedenplatz or Karlsplatz and change there. The stadium bridge was also closed to car traffic during the autumn holidays; bus 80A only ran in sections during this time. From November, more precisely from November 3rd, the bus can again offer its services in the direction of Praterstern on the usual route.

In addition, bus line 77A will continue to be rerouted via the A23, while the U6 and the Badner Bahn will run smoothly on their regular routes again after the autumn holidays. Comprehensive maintenance is essential for Wiener Linien, as an efficient transport network requires both expansion and ongoing maintenance. Vienna lines highlights that information on the modernization and expansion of the network will be made publicly available.

A look into the future

With the “Network even more” modernization offensive, Wiener Linien will continue to invest in infrastructure in the future: in 2024, an impressive 223 million euros will flow into work on tracks, tunnels and stations. Progress is not always immediately visible to passengers; most of the work takes place at night or during non-operational times. The city of Vienna invests in the future of transport and plans to modernize almost 20 kilometers of track and 100 switches in the tram network. The important streets for the track renewals include Kreuzgasse, Wiedner Hauptstraße and the Augarten Bridge.

In the coming years there will also be a lot of changes on the subway lines, such as the switch replacement on the U1 and U4. Together with other project partners, large-scale renovations are being initiated, which should offer noticeable improvements for all public transport passengers in the future.

A design of climate-friendly neighborhoods is currently underway, with spaces for cycle paths and green spaces being planned, such as in Wiedner Hauptstrasse. This not only creates a modern transport network, but also a more beautiful living space for all Viennese.
