Fire brigade festival in Babensham: 150 years full of tradition and community

A very special anniversary is coming up in Babensham: The fire departments of Babensham, Penzing and Schambach are celebrating their 150th birthday together! The preparations for this big festival began two years ago and are now reaching their climax. The celebrations will open with a disco party on June 18th, followed by a beer tapping on June 20th. The big festival Sunday on June 22nd promises a three-kilometer parade and finally a kettle meat dinner takes place on June 23rd. The festival tent at the roundabout in the direction of Altbabensham offers space for around 2,000 visitors, which guarantees happy hours!

These fire departments were founded an impressive 150 years ago. There are a total of 116 volunteer fire departments in the Rosenheim region, which represents the importance of firefighting and disaster control in the communities. The commanders of the three fire departments are also involved: Andreas Brunnlechner from Babensham, Ludwig Egger from Penzing and Matthias Göttsberger from Schambach.

Active members and missions

But what about the activity of the defense forces? Last year, the fire departments had a total of 73 active members, 19 of whom are women. The deployment numbers show different activities: Babensham had 28 deployments, Penzing 18 and Schambach, with its quiet operational situation, only 7 deployments. Nevertheless, the past year was challenging for all fire departments due to several storms. The commanders particularly emphasize cohesion and mutual support among members.

There are also positive developments in recruiting young talent. The youth fire brigade brings a breath of fresh air into the ranks and ensures that there will be enough young people available in the future. However, there are also complaints about the increasing bureaucratization that is putting a strain on the fire service.

A look at fire service history

A look at the history of the fire service shows that fire protection has long been one of the cornerstones of society. A kind of fire department with 600 slaves already existed in the Roman Empire in 21 BC. BC and with the emergence of urban structures, the need for organized fire protection also grew. In Europe, volunteer fire departments often developed from gymnastics clubs, while the first professional fire department was founded in Vienna in 1686.

These long traditions underline the importance that the fire service has had and continues to have over the centuries. In Germany, the first volunteer fire department as we understand it today was founded in Meißen in 1841, which shows how important this service is for the safety of citizens.

The upcoming celebrations in Babensham are not only an occasion for joy and celebration, but also a reminder of the tireless work and dedication of the firefighters, whose commitment is based on service to the community.

We wish the Babensham, Penzing and Schambach fire departments an unforgettable anniversary celebration and continued success in their important work in firefighting!
