Vienna: Parking ends up in hospital for 73-year-old – driver drunk!
A shocking incident occurred on August 11, 2025 in Paletzgasse in the Ottakring district. A 64-year-old driver shifted into the wrong gear while parking, causing life-threatening injuries to a 73-year-old man. The driver was drunk, as a breath alcohol test showed: he had a blood alcohol content of 0.6 per mille. This most critical form of impaired driving has once again revealed the dangers of drunk driving, as figures from Germany show, where alcohol-related traffic accidents have repeatedly made headlines for years. According to current statistics, such incidents continue to be a significant problem on the road. Vienna.at reports that the accident was so dramatic that the car drove forward and trapped the pensioner between two parked vehicles.
The Vienna professional rescue service immediately went to the scene of the accident to provide the seriously injured pensioner with immediate medical care. He was then taken to a hospital where he is receiving further treatment. Meanwhile, the person who caused the accident was reported and the traffic accident squad began investigating. It remains to be seen what legal consequences will await him.
Alcoholism and road safety
Drunk driving is a topic that always causes debate. According to a comprehensive study by the Federal Statistical Office, significant numbers of alcohol-related traffic accidents were recorded in Germany alone from 1995 to 2024. Statista points out that a large number of these accidents can have fatal consequences. Such incidents not only raise the need for better education, but also the responsibility of each individual when dealing with alcohol.
The incident in Vienna is not just an isolated case, but a sobering reminder of how quickly tragic accidents can occur. The 64-year-old driver could have maintained control with a clear mind - and thus perhaps saved not only others, but also himself a lot of suffering. The safety situation on the roads therefore remains an important issue, not least with regard to one's own responsibility as a road user.
