Deadly shots in Ottakring: hunt for fugitive perpetrators started!
On Friday night, a tragic crime disturbed the peace in Ottakring. At around 9:45 p.m. there was a deadly confrontation between two groups in a corner restaurant on Payergasse, which was anything but harmonious. Loud courier A 33-year-old Chechen died at the scene, while a 55-year-old Serb was critically shot in the upper body.
The shots were fired and the perpetrator and his companions immediately fled the location. Shortly after the incident, the police cordoned off the area and launched a large-scale manhunt, which has so far been unsuccessful. On Friday morning, a suspect finally turned himself in to the police accompanied by his lawyer. He may have been the driver of the getaway vehicle, but denies direct involvement in the crime.
The background to the dispute
The signs indicate that a dispute over a loan of 50,000 euros, which was originally supposed to be divided between two people, led to the tragic escalation. However, a third party, who is considered the main suspect, is said to have taken half of the money, which led to the confrontation. The now arrested suspect stated that he was carrying an illegal weapon and was then taken into custody.
According to the rescue workers, the Serb who was shot was responsive when they arrived, but is in critical condition and is in the intensive care unit of a hospital.
Security situation and consequences
District leader Stefanie Lamp expressed concern about the incident and emphasized the urgency of taking the existing weapons ban at Yppenplatz and Brunnenmarkt very seriously. This ban was extended earlier this month until February 2, 2026. Since its entry into force, 27 weapons have already been seized, including 17 knives, highlighting the worrying security situation in the area.
It remains to be seen how authorities will handle this case as residents hope for greater safety on their streets. The situation in Ottakring casts a shadow over the otherwise lively neighborhood, which strives to look after its community even in difficult times.
