Bloody shooting in Vienna-Ottakring: One dead and life-threateningly injured
On Thursday evening, November 9, 2025, there was a frightening shooting in a Turkish restaurant called Liman in Vienna-Ottakring, which left one dead and one seriously injured. A 33-year-old Chechen man was shot dead, while a 55-year-old Serb man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The authorities have already taken measures to clarify the background to the dispute and possible consequences.
The shooting occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. A witness, who was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time, survived the shooting with minor injuries. The suspected shooter, Ferdi B., entered the restaurant with an illegal handgun and opened fire on the Chechen. He then fled in a dark BMW X5 before emergency services arrived. However, there are concerns that this act of violence could lead to a gang war as friends of the man killed seek revenge.
Background to the dispute
According to initial investigations, the dispute between two groups revolves around a five-figure Swiss loan that turned out to be problematic. It is rumored that up to six men were involved on the Russian side and three to four on the other side. A man allegedly had 25,000 euros in an envelope and refused to hand it over. In fact, the dispute was over financial matters between petty criminals who made ends meet by driving taxis and doing odd jobs.
The argument apparently began during a discussion in the restaurant where lentil soup and the dessert Sütlac were served. The second wounded man, a 55-year-old Serb, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and is fighting for his survival.
Investigations and arrests
A Chechen man who was involved in protecting the Turks turned himself in to the police with his lawyer. She reported that her client was not directly involved in the crime. Nevertheless, he was arrested at 4:20 a.m. after he was carrying a weapon and was in the perpetrator's getaway vehicle. The investigators have already contacted two witnesses (38 and 35 years old). Despite the ban on weapons, one of them had a Glock with him and was in the getaway car.
The agency has currently classified all those involved as innocent pending further evidence. A police spokesman said that investigations are continuing intensively to clarify exactly what happened and to prevent further acts of violence.
These dramatic events highlight the increasing violence in the region. Just the day before, there was a bloody incident in another restaurant in Ottakring, in which an innkeeper and a guest were attacked with knives. Given what is currently happening, the question is: where is this wave of violence leading?
The Viennese population is increasingly concerned about rising crime and the associated risks. Hopefully the authorities will quickly find solutions to restore security and prevent future incidents.
