Vienna tourism: Almost half of the population sees advantages!
The latest study on tourism acceptance in Vienna shows encouraging results. According to a survey by Statistics Austria, almost 50 percent of Viennese perceive local tourism as positive. This puts the federal capital at the top of the nationwide ranking, where 45 percent of the population nationwide have a positive attitude towards tourism. My district reports that only 7.9 percent of Viennese perceive the effects of tourism negatively.
This survey was conducted as part of a regular tourism acceptance survey. An almost even distribution of opinions can be observed among Viennese: 34.7 percent think that the number of tourists is appropriate, while 34.6 percent are of the opinion that there are rather a lot of tourists in Vienna. Statistics Austria explains that this survey serves to assess the social sustainability of tourism and is published once a year.
The importance of tourism for Vienna
Mayor Michael Ludwig emphasizes that the city relies on targeted management, high quality and sustainability. The integration of tourism into city politics is essential for him. Especially in a city like Vienna, which is very popular as a tourist destination, the perception of tourism is not only treated as an economic factor, but also as part of the quality of life. In this context, positive perceptions have always been high, such as: Federal Government executes.
In order to further promote the positive effects of tourism and to manage the existing challenges, the FPÖ criticizes Mayor Ludwig and the city government. However, the government's focus on sustainability and the proper management of tourism is appreciated by many citizens. Tourism acceptance remains at a high level in Austria and contributes significantly to the regional economy and the labor market.
Continuous survey of tourism acceptance
Tourism acceptance has been continuously empirically surveyed since 2020. This shows how important a well-founded analysis of the population's attitude towards tourism is. In 2023, 2,439 people between the ages of 15 and 75 were surveyed representatively and the results show that acceptance is at a high index of 75 points - despite the challenges of the pandemic years. The 2024 survey will be presented on June 30, 2025 and once again promises interesting insights into the formation of opinions on tourism.
Vienna remains a popular place for tourists and the locals are also happy - that's good news for everyone who lives and works in the city. A positive sign that should continue to be taken into account in future decisions in urban planning and tourism development.
