Queer Frames: The film festival revitalizes Margareten and Spittelberg!

Spittelberg, Österreich - in Vienna soon starts with the queer film festival "Queer Frames", which will flicker over the canvas from June 12th to 29th, 2025 in the film casino in Margareten and in the film house on Spittelberg. The festival has set itself the goal of presenting queer filmmakers from all over the world and invites you to immerse yourself in the variety of topics related to love, identity and social borderline experiences. A total of nine films are shown that show how colorful and complex queer life is. A special highlight is the film "Dark Habits", in which the drug addict Yolanda dares to get a new beginning in the monastery after the death of her friend and meets unconventional nuns there. This film will be shown on June 19 at 6 p.m. in the Spittelberg film house. The festival appeals to a wide audience, regardless of gender, origin or sexual orientation. The idea for "queer frames" is not only located in Vienna; The festival is inspired by other initiatives, such as the Queer Film Festival Munich, which was launched in 2015. This independent institution promotes diversity in the cinema and shows films that stand away from hetero- and homonormative narratives. Here stereotypes are critically countered and intersectional queere perspectives are emphasized. It is about the central question of who is shown in the film landscape and what connotations are derived from it. The filmmakers get a platform to interpret queerness politically and solidarity and to research various life designs.

At the Filmz Symposium, which took place on November 4, 2023, experts like Dr. Sarah Horn and Prof. Dr. Simon Dickel with the change and the representation of queer topics in the film. Among other things, Dr. Horn presented, which illuminates the everyday challenges of a translocated protagonist. It quickly becomes clear how important the discussion about self -determination and protection against violence is for queer people.
