Netflix hit 'Crooks' brings shine to Vienna's film set!
There is great anticipation in Vienna because the popular international series “Crooks” is returning to the capital for a second season. Filming will run until the beginning of July and will take place in the most beautiful locations in the city. She cleverly combines her love of crime novels with the charm of Vienna and thus attracts an audience of millions. After the worldwide success of the first season, expectations are high.
Renowned actors such as Frederick Lau, Christoph Krutzler and the American actor Mark Ivanir are in front of the camera during filming. The director is Marvin Kren, who not only received the “Blue Panther – Streaming & TV Award” for the first season, but also now has creative responsibility again. The story follows the ex-safecracker Charly and the underworld taxi driver Joseph, who experience their exciting adventures in Vienna.
Vienna as a film location
What makes Vienna such an attractive place for filmmakers? Not only is it rich in historical locations such as the Kohlmarkt, the Graben and the Burgtheater, but the city also offers an extensive support program for international productions. The Vienna Film Incentive is investing an impressive two million euros in the project, thereby highlighting the city as a hotspot for film and series productions.
This strong commitment is not only important support for the film industry, but also an economic driving force for tourism. Norbert Kettner, Managing Director of WienTourismus, emphasizes the positive impulses that international filming has on the local economy. In addition, according to the “Travelsat Index”, ten percent of international travelers chose Vienna as a travel destination because of its cinematic appeal.
Collaboration and funding conditions
The Vienna Film Incentive, launched in 2022, enables international productions to film in Vienna and involves local film producers. One criterion is that the films or series must have at least two days of filming in Vienna and be longer than 45 minutes. Applications for funding can be submitted until December 31, 2025 – online via a special portal.
The high demand for financial and logistical support shows how important it is to further expand the city's film diversity. Although Vienna already offers many backdrops, the city's full potential for feature films, documentaries and series productions is far from exhausted.
With more and more Hollywood productions choosing the city as a backdrop - including films by Guy Ritchie with stars like Natalie Portman - Vienna's cultural appeal is constantly growing. The success of “Crooks” will not only delight viewers, but will also further consolidate and expand the city’s cinematic standing. Let’s see what this second season has in store for the local film industry!
